Customer Reviews
Great solo LP from former Level 42 drummer.
Superb solo effort from former level 42 drummer Phil Gould. Features Mike Lindup supplying lead vocals and keys on 4 tracks. Not the early jazz-funk stylings of his previous band, but nice, mature pop songs. Nice to see an artist stray from the 4/4 time signatures, and write some tunes in odd time signatures, and it works well! It's been a longtime coming for some solo material from Phil, and this album is worth the wait. My fave track is "Innocent Abroad', featuring Mike Lindup. Enjoy
My favorite drummer from the 80's. Ive been a professional drummer for 30 years, level 42 and Phil were always ahead of their time. This is real music.
Level 42 fans should love this
It took awhile, but Phil Gould has released an album that should tide over Level 42 fans quite nicely. Although a lot of very strong work has come from that band after the Gould brothers' departure, it is often thought that they never reached the peak of the Running In the Family era. I disagree, but I will say that this album is a lot stronger than L42's recent Retroglide release. This is a laid back, jazzy album that happily features strong vocal contributions from Mike Lindup (on 3 of the album's strongest tracks) and a female singer named Bernice, whose vocals resemble Brenda Russell's at their most sexy. Not everything works--Perfect Love is a bit too by-the-numbers and Add a Little Peace Of Mind is an atypical track to end the album on--but Colour of My Pain, Innocent Abroad, Stopped Clocks and Gotta Let You Go feature the type of tricky time signatures and vocal hooks that many would associate with the best of Level 42, whether PG appreciates that or not! Check it out!
