One of the Top 3 Albums of 2008
I really love this album, and honestly how can you not? I enjoy Mr. Blake's stylistic stylings. My three favorite albums of 2008 so far: Vampire Weekend, R.E.M. and Chris Blake.
A Fine Effort
I've been a fan of Chris Blake since he began sharing songs on imeem. Out of all the "indie" bands I've come across there, he's the most intriguing to me. Possibly because there is genuine artistry and feeling in just about everything he does (which is as wide and varied as a vegetable farm). The most innovative album of 2008, Wave is not.But there are some real gems here. It's hard to resist the pained emotive zeal of Phantom or Iceberg. The Journey and Blow Away tunes are a lot of fun too. But I like Blake especially during the quiet moments. The uncertainty of Mean It Now and total humiliation of The Race generate a sense of weight and sorrow that survives the album’s weaker moments. It is the kind of weight and sorrow you don’t mind carrying with you. Well done, Blake. You came really close to nailing this one. (But I'll give you the five stars anyway.)
Not Easily Categorized
Where did this come from? A fantastic record, and I'm a full on music snob. Great power-pop ("Trains", "How Journey Saved My Life") and a couple of fantastic slo-jamz as well (particularly "Mean It Mow" and "Lullaby"). Look forward to hearing more from this unknown talent.
