iTunes Review
In the '50s, pianist-composer Antonio Carlos Jobim stripped Brazilian samba to its core and created the sparse, elegant bossa nova style, which first swept through South America, and then the rest of the world. His success led him to the United States, where he worked with some of the greatest jazz and pop talents of the '60s. Recorded in 1967, Wavewas Jobim's the first of three albums recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label, and featured glossy, syrupy string arrangements from Jobim's frequent collaborator, Claus Ogerman, as well as backing by top-flight American jazz players such as bassist Ron Carter and trombonist Urbie Green. The title track is one of Jobim's most beautiful melodies, while the album's only vocal track, "Lamento," offers a rare opportunity to hear Jobim singin his weary, modest whisper.
Customer Reviews
Please Make Yourself Comfortable
This is chillout lounge before anyone thought to market it. A 1967 non-stop, jumbo-jet, first-class, TWA flight from NY to Rio.
Jobim's samba masterpiece
On the surface, this albums provides an airtight 31 minute groove great for background music for anything you happen to be doing. However, to the serious listener, these ten songs are filled with Jobim's masterful samba progressions, superb songwriting and effortless genius. This album is quickly becomming my favorite jazz album.
Classic Jobim!
For those who don't know this unbelievable artist I recommend the album. Within the album you will hear 'standards' used by a multitude of radio stations across the country in the 1960's. Jobim demanded perfection and to the listeners delight it's here.
