iTunes Review
Nick Drake recorded only three solo albums in his brief but brilliant career, with the posthumous collection, Time of No Reply, following many years later. His tragic death in 1974 at age 26 perfectly mirrors the melancholy underpinning his greatest work and has turned the young English singer-songwriter into a cult legend. Drake’s catalog is a lean, concise collection of uniformly excellent material and performances. His unusual guitar tunings, his adept finger-picking, his otherworldly ghost of a voice combine to form one of the most fascinating sounds in modern music. Way to Blue collects highlights from each of his albums and serves as a worthy introduction to the man’s music. Since he never released a subpar recording, there is no potential for a misstep here. There are only personal preferences. “Northern Sky” from Drake’s second album, Bryter Layter, is a breathtaking work that comes to a grand crescendo with John Cale’s piano and celeste adding dramatic height. “Cello Song,” “River Man,” “Hazey Jane I” and “II,” “Pink Moon,” the tracks roll past in heavenly succession. The only downside is the missing gems (“Fly,” “Thoughts of Mary Jane”) that are readily available on the original studio albums.
Customer Reviews
Excellent compilation, but buy all of the other albums instead
If you purchase this compilation of Nick's "best" works...(can one really pick the best among a nearly perfect catalog?)...you will eventually find yourself buying all three studio albums and the odds and ends collection (Made to Love Magic), which contain all of the songs included here. The one track on this disc you must own, however, is "Time of No Reply." This compilation is now the only in-print collection that contains the guitar and vocals-only recording of this song. The Magic compilation has the version with the newly-recorded addition of Robert Kirby's original arrangement. My personal opinion is that the simpler recording presented here serves the song better. So if you own the other albums presented by iTunes...the only track you need here is "Time of No Reply." In short, if you only own one Nick Drake disc, this is the one to have. But I found out that owning just one Nick Drake disc is simply not acceptible....you must own them all.
Stupendous
I must admit I'd never heard of Nick Drake until the Garden State movie came out. But I purchased two of his albums since. "Way to Blue" is my favorite it has a pleasent and unique sound. Nicks voice is very mellow and it is difficult to compare to other artists (Ryan Adams maybe). It is a soothing almost therapeutic album and I enjoy listening to it when I study. the guitar riffs in mostly alternate low d tunings add to the laid back, mellow vocal feeling, it's a great buy! My favorites = "things behind the sun" and "northern sky".
Excellent Introduction to Nick Drake
My first taste of Nick Drake was in the mid-1990s from a jukebox in lower Manhattan, "River Man" was the song. I have never regretted purchase of this album. I agree that it's a timeless classic!
