iTunes Review

Back in the mid-‘90s, Waylon Jennings and his son Shooter recorded a number of songs together. A decade later, Shooter brought his band, the .357’s, into the studio to finish the recordings, and the result is the 2008 release, Waylon Forever. The album kicks off with “Jack of Diamonds,” and Jennings and the band sound great on this slice of classic Waylon. “Outlaw S***” nicely weds gruff vocals to pedal steel and strings arranged by David Campbell. A rockin’ version of Rodney Crowell’s “Ain’t Livin’ Long Like This” is followed by a spare take on Neil Young’s “Are You Ready for the Country?” and a blastin’ rendition of Steve Young’s “Lonesome On’ry and Mean.” Following the psych-tinged “Waymore’s Blues,” Jennings pulls out a surprise: a cover of the Cream classic, “White Room.” Waylon actually pulls it off, and the subtle reworking of the chorus is particularly effective. Waylon Forever closes with the spooky “I Found the Body,” which sports processed lead vocals and chant-like backup singing. The track is credited to father and son; the production clearly shows Shooter’s touch.

KILLER COUNTRY

I Love Waylon. I Love this record. Lonesome On'ry and Mean, Jack of Diamonds and Waymore's Blues are the best. There's a lot of new arrangements that were confusing at first, but now I'm addicted to it. A must have for Waylon fans. Essential for Shooter fans. The band sounds incredible. Leroy Powell's guitar work is amazing. Like Pink Floyd and AC/DC and Waymore's Blues Band and Waylon. It's Killer Country

Are You Sure Waylon Done It This Way?

The songs are familiar; the arrangements are not. At first, it's jarring to hear "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand" re-worked as a ballad ("Outlaw S***"). And yet, it's undeniably Waylon. Not only is that his ragged, deep voice driving these recordings, but there is still an entirely Waymore vibe throughout this entirely too brief set. I'm upset that iTunes took almost a month to add this, and even more upset that now that they have added it, it has an exclusive bonus track ("White Room [Quiet]"). They say these were recorded in 1996, but they really sound more recent than that; contrast these vocals with how Waylon sounds on his 1996 album "Right for the Time" and his 1998 album "Closing In on the Fire" and you'll hear what I mean.

This album reminds me why I don't listen to the radio anymore.....

I rarely hear a song on the radio anymore that is in the same league as Waylon. The versions found on this album are a testement to Waylon and Shooter both. For Waylon, it shows that his words and style were and will always be relevant. For Shooter and the .357's, they show that there are still musicians out there that want to give people the same style of pure music that Waylon and his friends did because that is what matters, not this "cookie-cutter" stuff being passed off as country music now.
