iTunes Review

This indie band from Philly wears its influences loudly and proudly; reviewers often cite classic rock bands such as the Beatles and the Beach Boys, but we detect another B-great here: David Bowie. From the first strains of the lavishly orchestrated “Old News,” Bowie’s yearning howl haunts throughout, and the Ziggy Stardust theatrical ethos holds court like a revered spirit. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!) The fourth album by the Dog won over legions of new fans, after honing a quirky, retro, pop sound with a bit more restraint, polishing up pianos and organs and Beatles-esque harmonies while throwing in flavors from the group's historically soulful hometown. “Worst Trip” starts off with a repetitive, plaintive piano that segues into brassy, Stax-feeling horns (yeah, we know that’s a Memphis sound), and the layers of keyboards and tambourines on “My Old Ways” and the repentant “Die Die Die” recall soul radio classics from decades past.  (There’s even a comforting hiss of worn vinyl running through some tracks.) But classic pop is at the heart of Dr. Dog’s music, and they excel at reshaping the genre with a post-modern sense of irony, possibility and romanticism and they do it with brains, wit, and no small amount of love.

how can an album be this great?

Dr. Dog's Easy Beat was a gem, but We All Belong is almost as good as a pop masterpiece can get. I can't believe what I am hearing. Really! This exceeds any expectations that I had. After waiting months and months for this record to come out, I admit, I didn't think this could be done. What in the world will they do next? You've done good Dr. Dog! Thank you.

Best Band EVER!

Dr. Dog is officially the best band ever. I've known this since Toothbrush came out. All of their albums are phenominal(Although I have yet to hear Psychedellic Swamp) and radiate glory throughout all the tracks. And their label, Park The Van, is amazing with what they do. Chris is the best guy ever. Make sure you check out Dr. Dog and stick with them. They've got alot more to come out of their musical genious.

WOW!

Are you kidding me? Alaska might be the best song I have heard in years....the whole album is great...I can't wait to see these guys live again when they come to LA. Last years show was one of my real highlights....great live band and now a GREAT album. Go Dr. Dog!

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Philadelphia-based Dr. Dog are part of a long tradition of D.I.Y. pop oddballs who blend unapologetic '60s pop worship with lo-fi recording techniques and an apparent disregard for current trends. The group began as a part-time offshoot of the more traditional indie rock act Raccoon. Over the course of several years, guitarist Toby Leaman and drummer Scott McMicken found enough free time to record the casual, sprawling 35-track set The Psychedelic Swamp in a basement rehearsal space, finally...
