Album Review

Three of the terms that one hears in connection with death metal are "technical death metal," "melodic death metal" and "blackened death metal" — and all three of them apply to Arsis to some degree on We Are the Nightmare. The material on this 2008 release is decidedly technical; We Are the Nightmare isn't math metal, but it's definitely the type of demanding, often angular material that you aren't going to be able to play if you don't have your chops together (which the members of Arsis obviously do). And Arsis, for all their thrashy, bombastic intensity, are relatively melodic — not ultra-melodic, but relatively melodic. That brings us to the blackened part, which has a lot to do with lead singer James Malone's extreme vocals. Although one hears some deep, guttural "Cookie Monster" growling (one of death metal's trademarks) on We Are the Nightmare, most of the vocals favor the type of sinister-sounding rasp that black metal is known for. There are no clean vocals on this 40-minute CD, only extreme vocals, and the rasp is much more prominent on We Are the Nightmare than the "Cookie Monster" who has been a big part of death metal since the '80s. But as much as Malone's rasp (which could peel paint) does to blacken Arsis' death metal, this is still a death metal album first and foremost. If Malone gave up the rasp and let the "Cookie Monster" prevail 100-percent of the time, Arsis' death metal would have very little in the way of blackening. Arsis, it should be noted, is among the death metal bands that emerged in the United States in the early 2000s — a time in which death metal, like black metal, was dominated by the Scandinavian countries. The tunes on We Are the Nightmare aren't remarkable, but they are decent and remind us that American bands still have some things to offer death metal in the 21st century.

Customer Reviews

I don't write negative reviews very often....

But this is a bit ridiculous. Yes, the drums are insane. Yes, the guitars are, well, relatively insane (you could find much better), and no, the vocals are NOT good (he's just speaking into a mic, at which point they run his voice through a billion effects to make it sound like he's screaming. The funny part is they show this on their DVD). These guys are so caught up in the technical mumbo jumbo it's sad. There are a few little moments of genuine musical proess on this CD (buy Sightless wisdom, it has a part in the middle that is really quite good), but mostly, it's technicality for technicality's sake, random time signature/key changes and odd song writing just because they could. If you've gotten this far it seems that you are giving me the time of day so let me explain myself. I am a HUGE fan of technical metal. I get it, I swear I do. I'm not one of those idiots complaining because it's "just noise." I get the genre, and I've listened through the CD many times. These guys have all of the chops to make it in the genre (well, except for the vocalist. Kick him out and they'll be MUCH better off), they just don't understand two little things called emotion and coherency. In tech metal, it's VITAL that you have a flow to your songs, that they are (in an odd sense) pleasing to the ear. Arsis' songs have very little to no connective tissue. It's all very thrown together. Check out The Facelsess. These guys understand what it is to mold a song together and make it enjoyable but still keep it absolutely ridiculous and brutal and technical. That's the coherency. The emotion is a much bigger deal. If you've gotten THIS far, you're a saint and I ask you to reward yourself by going and checking out Betweent the Buried and Me if you haven't heard of them. They are masters of the craft. They know when to actually make their music SIMPLE, even though they could just blast you with brain pulsing math metal all they want. They get the emotional side of music, even if the emotion is insanity. Arsis, quite frankly, just sounds like an explosion, not insanity. Do you get that??? Arsis show great potential in their skill and even, in very very small portions, their writing. They just need to figure out the genre that they're in.

Their Best Album Yet

I've been an Arsis fan for a while, and ill have to say this album is definatly their best. The riffs and choruses are catchier then the last, theyre skills are displayed at an intense rate. The vocals are always good, and the new drummer has done a great job.

Biography

Formed: 2000

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Formed in 2000 by a violinist and a double bassist, Virginia-based death and thrash metal outfit Arsis — a musical term that relates to the original concept of "arsis and thesis," meaning up and down beats, to be more exact — got their start in Boston by Berklee College of Music students and friends James Malone (the violinist) and Michael Van Dyne, arguably more as a time filler rather than a serious project. With Van Dyne taking up drumming duties (he'd spent time studying drum performance)...
