iTunes Review

Blind Pilot is somewhat of an anomaly among its contemporaries in that the Portland sextet doesn't look to the past for inspiration. We Are the Tide is a refreshingly modern-sounding album starting with “Half Moon,” a strolling serenade that plays like a three-and-a-half-minute baroque-pop symphony laced with the rich tones of vintage wooden instruments. But even with an organic arsenal of trumpets, vibraphones, dulcimer, keyboards, violin, ukulele, harmonium, pump organ, pedal steel, and banjos, Blind Pilot exercises restraint in the moments when it’d be tempting to unleash sonic drama. Take “Keep You Right,” where pedaling rhythms leave plenty of wide-open space for instrumental indulgence. Instead, every member lets the song go where it wants. A snappy shuffle propels the title track’s rhythm, while watery pedal steel and a Hammond organ bend and grind notes into a rootsy alchemy that never upstages Nebeker’s unpredictably pretty melodies. Some East Coast adoration permeates “New York”: a Big Apple serenade of more than five minutes.

Where did my band go?

well, I will be the dissenter. I loved Three Rounds & A Sound....it was raw, it was acoustic, and it sounded vintage. In other words, not studio produced. They have lost their original sound. Some of the songs sound great, others sound almost--gasp---like pop rock. AAK! Half Moon sounds nothing like them! I will listen again....just to give it a fair chance....but so far I am disappointed. Where did my alt-indie Oregon band go????

beautiful beautiful beautiful

I have loved Blind Pilot since I first heard one of their songs on a friend's mix cd 3 years ago. their first album is one of my most-played, I've seen them live several times and I have had the opportunity to meet them (they are lovely people). so even if this new album was crap, I'd probably still love it because I have so much love for this band. however, the new album is gorgeous lyrically and musically. you can tell by listening that they love what they do. I love Israel's voice, I swear I can feel it in my toes. every song on this album is a winner, but "I Know" has become my favorite. buy this album now catch the band live if they come through your town!

Hasn't disappointed

Blind Pilot continues thriving on their original sound with this new album. I look forward to seeing them on their tour with Brett Dennen. Easily the best up and coming band I have heard. Thanks guys! Keep it up!

Biography

Formed: Portland, OR

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A Portland-based group originally comprised of singer/guitarist Israel Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski, Blind Pilot strikes a balance between mellow folk and West Coast indie pop. The two co-founders first banded together in college before combining their talents and touring the northwestern Oregon circuit. By 2006, however, they'd decided that a change of scenery might help their songwriting. Blind Pilot consequently relocated 90 miles north, where the guys spent three months inside an Astoria...
