Album Review

The liner notes to Capitol's 20-track retrospective of rock goddess Pat Benatar's golden years are filled with testimonials from some of the genre's queens, both reigning (Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos) and retired (Jane Wiedlin, Martha Davis). It's a fitting tribute to the artist, as her four-and-a-half-octave vocal range spewing arena-sized anthems has yet to be matched by anyone with as much rock & roll panache. "We Belong," "Shadows of the Night," "Promises in the Dark," and "Love Is a Battlefield" are all certifiable '80s classics — not just guilty pleasures — and even later semi-hits like "Sex as a Weapon" and "All Fired Up" don't sound as overwrought as one would imagine, having not heard them in some time. Greatest Hits is just five songs longer than 1989's Best Shots — reissued in 2003 with an accompanying DVD — but the inclusion of fan favorites such as "Little Too Late" and "Le Bel Age" make this collection the most effective to date. Fair is fair.

MY FAVORITE CD!

I am 14 and in a harder core rock band. I am a girl and I've always admired Pat Benatar for being in my opionion the greatest female singer ever. She is so raw, but her music sounds like something. "Shadows of the Night", "Fire and Ice", "hit me with your best shot" and "heartbreaker" are the best songs on the album. I know that most people my age have no appreciation for good music, but dont think like that when i tell you this is the best album ever. If you don't buy this cd you are definatly missing out.

Big Benatar's Smash Track

This is an awesome CD! I love how she has that raw voice coupled with the rock beat in the background. It's great for people who would like to relive the 80s once again. I just don't like how her voice can get high and really clash with the theme of the whole album. Other then that, it's a great album. There's bound to be a song you like here!

REAL ROCK ROXS!!!

This music is awesome. I wish I was alive in her time because her music is so rad. I'm so glad she came out with a greatest hits because we would have totally missed out.

Biography

Born: January 10, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Pat Benatar's polished mainstream pop/rock made her one of the more popular female vocalists of the early '80s. Although she came on like an arena rocker with her power chords, tough sexuality, and powerful vocals, her music was straight pop/rock underneath all the bluster. Born Patricia Andrzejewski on January 10, 1953, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the singer was raised in the nearby town of Lindenhurst on Long Island, NY. Benatar began singing regularly in the New York City area by the '70s, where...
