iTunes Review

On We Do What We Want the songs detail painful breakups, helpless longing and unfettered angst, acknowledging self-destructive impulses without denying the ultimate power of faith. Tobey Morrell’s sweet-toned singing makes a perfect foil for Josh Head’s guttural screams as Emery’s arrangements shift in mood and tempo according the contours of the tunes. Sonically, the album moves from the mouth-frothing intensity of “The Cheval Glass” and “Scissors” into the brutal yet poppy passages of “I’m Not Here for Rage I’m Here for Revenge” before hitting a patch of deceptive calm with “Daddy’s Little Peach.” The band even manages to pull off the remorse-filled “I Never Got to See the West Coast” in a mostly acoustic setting. By the time We Do What We Want ends with the reverent, grandly melodic “Fix Me,” Emery has taken the listener on a careening emotional ride, skirting the edge of the abyss before offering the hope of salvation.

Customer Reviews

Are you listening?

This album is absolutely brilliant. From start to finish you'll be listening and thinking, "Emery has done it again."

As a fan of the harder and softer tones of Emery there is little to say other than buy this album.

If you ever liked Emery, if you ever think you liked Emery, buy this album and you won't regret it.

Amazing album. I hate it when...

I hate it when idiots try to write a review saying why they feel the band let them down. They wrote the music that they wanted to and it came out perfectly. If they wrote music that sounded like the "last album" then it would be boring and show no musical progress for the band. This obviously shows off your horrible taste in music. The acoustic songs are great, the heavy songs are great, and if your a fool, you won't buy this album.

Seriously?

How can fans actually give this tons of five star ratings and rave reviews?
The album is too far off the deep end. I love their heavy stuff, and the deep lyrics, but when it gets this heavy, where the music is boring and the lyrics are so poetic that the fans have no idea what it means...this album was a terrible idea.
I bought it, after previewing it, and hearing some of the first singles.
The singles like Cheval Glass and Scissors...almost turned me off to the album. Curse of Perfect Days and I Never Got To See the West Coast are the only songs worth buying.
Emery said in their EP While Broken Hearts Prevail that they were tired of scene drama and bs, and that they wanted fans to like entire albums rather than just a few singles...so, it confuses me that they'd want to distance themselves from scene labels and make good music to encourage fans to buy the whole album rather than a song or two...and then they make this monstrosity.
Sorry Emery...I love the band, I love your music, and I'm probably going to be considered the uncool guy for posting a negative review when it's cool to fall in line and accept sub-par music from a band who is much more talented than this...but my words stand.
Hopefully, I save someone some money out there.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Like From Autumn to Ashes, Nora, and Hopesfall, Emery combines an alternative pop/rock foundation with elements of screamo and melodic hardcore. A Christian theme also runs throughout the band's music, which often examines the contrasts between Heaven/Hell, melody/brutality, and conventional singing/guttural screaming. Formed in South Carolina in 2001, the band originally included the talents of recent college graduates Toby Morrell (vocals, guitar), Matt Carter (guitar), Joel Green (bass), Devin...
