iTunes Review
On We Do What We Want the songs detail painful breakups, helpless longing and unfettered angst, acknowledging self-destructive impulses without denying the ultimate power of faith. Tobey Morrell’s sweet-toned singing makes a perfect foil for Josh Head’s guttural screams as Emery’s arrangements shift in mood and tempo according the contours of the tunes. Sonically, the album moves from the mouth-frothing intensity of “The Cheval Glass” and “Scissors” into the brutal yet poppy passages of “I’m Not Here for Rage I’m Here for Revenge” before hitting a patch of deceptive calm with “Daddy’s Little Peach.” The band even manages to pull off the remorse-filled “I Never Got to See the West Coast” in a mostly acoustic setting. By the time We Do What We Want ends with the reverent, grandly melodic “Fix Me,” Emery has taken the listener on a careening emotional ride, skirting the edge of the abyss before offering the hope of salvation.

Emery-We do what we want
I pretty much grew up with emery, the weaks end was incredible, the question was unbelievable. I'm only a man was...well...I'm only a man(I found some things to like from that album however). In shallow seas we sail brought them back to form however in the best way possible.
So now we come to We do what we want, with Devin gone, I was expecting it to sound a little different and heavy. These are my thoughts on each track.
The cheval glass-9/10: Good melodies by Toby in this song, you can quickley see the direction they are taking for the album, bit too simplistic in guitar work.
Scissors-7/10: Not diggin it, Seems like a few parts could have been left out(screaming at the end).
The Anchors-9/10: Love the beggining, for the first time in the album, the screams are placed well, good chorus.
The curse of perfect days-10/10: Im hip on this song! Good screams in the verse and a great chorus, well done!
You wanted it-9.5/10: Another great song! Heartfelt lyrics and good melodies in the chorus.
I'm not here for rage I'm here for revenge-6/10: Least favorite song so far, kind of boring most parts.
Daddy's little peach-8.5/10: Different styles showing up here, marking Emery's growth as a band, good song.
Addicted to bad decisions-8/10: Good, not great. Very good lyrics on this one.
I never got to see the west coast-8.5/10: Very soft song for Emery. Lyrics about suicide that make you think.
Fix me-9/10: Another slow one, but probably better than the one that comes before it. A song that probably wouldent have belonged on issws but fits in perfectly here.
Pros: Toby's vocals sounded great on this album and the screaming doesnt comepletely sound like nails on chalboard now. The heavy songs are heavy and I am appreciating how Emery has stepped up after the loss of Devin. The production sounds good without being overdone which tooth & nail tends to do(the letter black). The lyrics also have never been better and especially amazed me on this album.
Cons: Bit too many soft ones here. They are good, but they somewhat sound the same. Speaking of sounding the same, this album seems to have a tendancy to do that. They need more variaty, which there is some, but still sounds like I'm listenning to one long song.
Note: There is a clear distinction between the 1st and 2nd half of the album here. One is softer while the other is more of the heavy style that was hyped. If you are looking for the heavy Emery I'd suggest the 1st half(1-5) of the record. People looking for a different, slightly softer style that hasnt popped up much in Emery's past albums should look in the 2nd half of the record.
Conclusion: At first I was a bit underwhelmed by We do what we want but it has grown on me since. Check it out and decide for yourself.

Great CD
Rarely do bands keep me entertained or songs surprise me, but Emery has truly outdone themselves. This cd has provided me with several of my favorite songs by emery to date and I honestly like every song on the album. Seriously. Great Job.
