Album Review
How do you know that former blink-182 leader Tom DeLonge intends for his post-blink project Angels and Airwaves to be taken seriously? Because throughout their debut album, We Don't Need to Whisper, he relies on sounds and textures borrowed from 1988, the era when college rock was filled with atmospheric sonics and earnest politics. Specifically, he layers delayed guitars ripped from U2 over soundscapes equally inspired by the Cure, New Order, Peter Gabriel, and The Unforgettable Fire, all in an attempt to fashion a modern-day protest record. The result might be less than successful, but it is interesting, particularly in how DeLonge's desire to be taken seriously has led him to use the serious music of his adolescence as a signifier that he's serious now.

Amazing, mezmerising, I can't use words
Truly...simply...mezmerising. Amazing. Brilliant work from the minds of Tom Delonge, Atom Willard, David Kenney and Ryan Sinn. Fortunatley, I was able to make it to the signing in NYC Virgin Megastore and meet the band, :D 1. Valkyrie Missile: Great intro, I did expect the guitar riff to be in the beginning (Sean) --- 9.5/10 2. Distraction: Great, simply, a little similar to other songs on the album. Oh well, 9/10 3. Do it For Me Now - Their next single, a little like their other songs... awesome. 9.5/10 4. The Adventure -- Their first single, also very good, not my favorite however. 9/10 5. A Little's Enough -- Its different, sadder and similar to Blink-182's self titled release...its good. I'll give it that. 8.9/10 6. The War -- Harder than the other songs, its awesome. 9/10 7. The Gift -- Good, a little similar to the Adventure. 8.5/10 8. It Hurts -- Best on the album. My favorite. 10/10 9. Good Day -- A little...corny. 7.5/10 10. Start the Machine -- Sort of like an synth rock version of Good Day. 8/10 11. The Adventure (Whispers) -- Sounds just like the album version...hmm (I won't give this a grade because, well, its not on the album) Overall, buy this CD. I highly suggest it, it will move you, and if it doesn't, then listen to it anyway. Its brilliant...trust me. Thank you. ---Superbrickdude
Completely Underwhelming
We've endured months of hype, watched as Tom Delonge and the rest of AVA ignored hundreds of deadlines they'd previously issued for themselves, and felt generally rejected since AVA was first announced a year and a half ago. It's OK, we always told ourselves, the wait will be worth it. Wrong. "We don't need to whisper" is unbearably mediocre. Perhaps it was Delonge's arrogant/"I'll be something great, like Warhol or Jesus" attitude (i.e. "I'm going to change your life", "My music will take you on a journey!") that makes the album so unenjoyable. The album bogs itself down in tired, boring, lifeless melodies that make it a chore to listen to. Valkyrie Missile has a nearly 3 minute introduction that I could barely stay awake for. At the end of the song the tempo picks up and I was filled with hope that the next song might be enlightening. I was, of course, let down. Every song on this album feels down beat and sullen. It Hurts is worth a listen, and you may like The Adventure, but after you've hearrd those two songs you can pretty much guess what the rest will be like. The bottom line: this album is painfully average.
Try it
So..I was really looking foward to this album. I am an avid Blink and Box Car Racer fan, so it's not that I am picking on Tom Delonge or anything..but I think the hype overdid this album....don't get me wrong..it's a GREAT cd, but it just isn't what I thought....it's not as upbeat and fast as I expected. It's slower than you'd think...but it is still great. Let me sum it up for you: If you enjoy music, buy this album. Period. If I had to choose one word to describe We Don't Need to Whisper, I'd say: Epic. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Word. SA
