TBTR: Track by Track Review of We Have Cause to Be Uneasy
Birmingham, Alabama-native alt/indie rockers Wild Sweet Orange have been working on this record for what seems like a very long time. With lots of experience behind them, including an appearance on the David Letterman Show, Wild Sweet Orange begins their mainstream journey here with We Have Cause to Be Uneasy. 1.) Ten Dead Dogs - The first single from the record, and for good reason. Plenty of memorable melodies with great lyrics to boot. Lead singer Preston Lovinggood pours out a sad but relatable tale backed by nostalgic soundscapes painted by the band. Production here is excellent. (5 stars) 2.) Tilt - And now the rock part begins to surface. Starting with a controlled quiet feel, the song escalates beautifully and quickly at the end of the simple but melodic chorus. Great arrangement, grade-A production, and haunting lyrics to carry it all. (5 stars) 3.) Seeing & Believing - A very quiet (mostly) and beautiful song. Its slightly distorted and deeply honest vocals are sure to give you goosebumps. Fitting lyrics, appropriate melody, and flawless performance by the whole band. Just great. (5 stars) 4.) Either/Or - Guitarist Taylor Shaw provides a southern rock guitar sound backed by the heavy cymbals of Chip Kilpatrick's drumming. Take that, plus more great production, plus original and stirring lyrics ("...And put your head in a lion's mouth, but you didn't feel scared?"), and you have another great song. (5 stars) 5.) Sour Milk - Palpable arrangement courtesy of a shimmering accordion part and more heartfelt story-filled lyrics. It's simple but necessarily so. The melody seems to lack a little towards the end as it begins to stray from the groundwork, but it in no way ruins the song. (4 stars) 6.) An Atlas to Follow - A folky track featuring a triumphant banjo and a confident piano. Lovinggood again crafts well-thought-out lyrics and gives the listener a song full of memorable lyrics. Instantly catchy melody. Amazing. (5 stars) 7.) House of Regret - Immediately spooky with very heavy bass and guitar parts. The chorus is pretty catchy and lyrics grab you by the headphones ("..Screaming at Jesus just to let you bleed"). Overall very haunting and thought-provoking. A loud and heavy outro gives this track a great ending. (5 stars) 8.) Crickets - Kilpatrick's drums and Garret Kelly's bass start the song off quiet and heavy. Shaw's guitar is also very inventive and compelling here throughout. Masterfully and precisely penned lyrics sung through Lovinggood's subtly toned vocals. Plenty of great melody to go around with a nice eventual build overall. A very creative lyric overlap towards the end. (5 stars) 9.) Aretha's Gold - More subtlety and more engaging soundscapes. A tight and controlled track with progressively dark lyrics. Kilpatrick's drums are again excellent, and Kelly's bass comes in solid, especially in the second verse. Lovinggood's vocals are especially raw on this track, and Shaw's guitar solo is impressive and well-fitting. (5 stars) 10.) Night Terrors - Another somewhat folky track with remnants of track 5. The lyrics here are some of the best on the record, even if they are slightly simple. The "Oh, and does God have a sound" part can send shivers up your spine. Intelligent songwriting with soothing vocal harmony throughout. (5 stars) 11.) Land of No Return - A meaningful and chilling way to end the album. Memorable and fitting melodies intertwine with desolate and sorrowful lyrics. It's a beautifully tragic story told by a heavyhearted narrator, and it is brilliant in every way. Get this song. 'Nuff said. (5 stars) Final: 4.91 (rounded to 5 stars). An incredible musical experience. A breath of fresh air. A tangible collection of stories of pain and hope. I have yet to hear anything like it. Go see a live show and whatever you do DEFINITELY get this album. Total: 4.91 -> 5 stars
FINALLY!
In the days where the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus top the charts, you are a breath of fresh air! We have been waiting for this album for a long, long time! Congrats friends!
Suprisingly good album
I'm not usually one for indie/folk music, but this album is enjoyable to the last second. If you like punk/metal but want to try something different, give this a listen. You won't be dissapointed. If you only buy one track, I suggest "An Atlas to Follow." It's a great song both lyrically and instrumentally.
