Album Review
Rock-rap only seems to make it when it comes primarily from the rock side. Ask Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, or Vernon Reid. The kids like the swagger, they like the bravado, but they aren't so hot for the grit, at least not genuine grit that comes from a genuinely oppressed life. Hopefully the very real Flipsyde can change all that, but half of what makes We the People a great album might also keep it off the charts. Deep social commentary doesn't get you on the radio, but catchy hooks do. Flipsyde are good on both counts, making their album accessible with the choruses and validating the included lyric sheet with their verse. They're mostly hip-hop on the vocal level and mostly rock in their instrumentation, but it's not all that simple, as Bad Boy-style beats support "Revolutionary Beat," while "Angel" features a Dave Matthews-esque singalong. Flipsyde excel at urgent social commentary and songs about day-to-day struggle, but they offer hope, too. Getting away from it all never had a better soundtrack than "Skippin' Stones," while "Time" is lively and cool enough to sound like it fell off a Black Eyed Peas album. More than the poppy Peas or the rougher rock-rappers of days past, Flipsyde owe a lot to Living Colour. They're as exciting, angry, and hungry and they feel like an honest to goodness band. One wishes the album's clean production would have let their edge cut deeper, but as debuts go, it's an engaging success. [This edition contains one bonus track.]
Customer Reviews
Just Wonderful
Ok, well I first heard the track "someday" a while back, and while it was good, honestly, it was nothing too special. I ended up checking out the rest of the album when it came out, and now it is definately my favorite album out of my 18,000 song music library. 1. Someday - Great track, definately not the best in the album 2. Spun - Great design of the song, they really show a lot of their lyrical talent in this song 3. U.S. History - Wonderful song, they do a great job explaining their point using analogies 4. Flipsyde - One of the best songs on the album, light and upbeat 5. Revolutionary Beat - Best of the album, they show their lyrical talent, and their incredible skills with the guitar, just check out the solo...I just learned to play it, and anyone else with a guitar will definately appreciate their talent. 6. Time - All around great song, light beat with some great lyrics 7. No More - The first of the slow songs, pretty good 8. Train - Love the beat, and the lyrics 9. Get Ready - Party song really 10. Angel - You can listen this whenever and it'll make you feel great 11. Skippin' Stones - All around great song, in every aspect 12. Trumpets - Brilliantly put together, they really show their true talent here. 13. Happy Birthday - Great beat, and a great solo song for Piper
Solid Debut Effort
This album is a very strong debut effort, the various musical styles blend together to create a compelling sound that is unlike anything I've heard before. The strong rock background combines with blazing lyrics that take off on the albums best songs. "Someday" is the obvious favorite off this album but I see this song being played out on the radio in about a week once the olympics come. "Spun" and "Flipsyde" are two songs that really showcase the rapping ability while "Happy Birthday" and "US History" offer some heavy social commentary in the guise of a catchy song. I see no glaring weaknesses with the album except for maybe the song "Trumpets" but 12/13 good songs is a pretty good ratio. It will be interesting to see how people react to this band once they start getting some airplay. The muscial aspects of the band are so strong but they actually give the listener something to think about which tends to make some uncomfortable. Personally, I think it is refreshing and I hope to see them as more then just a one album band.
Expect big things after the Winter Olympics
Flipsyde is one of those amazing bands that are unique today. Their view is politically charged and while that may keep them off some charts the fact that someday is going to be the theme NBC uses for the winter olympics will definitely get this band the exposure they need. Once people give this album a shot it will explode I am sure of it.
