Album Review
Well, why not a Roches Christmas album? It's actually perfect, if you stop and think about it — there's always been something cute and childlike about their tone, and when they put their formidable vocal chops to work on tunes as potentially complex as "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "The Holly and the Ivy," the results can be as gorgeous as they are unique. Their Brooklynese versions of "Frosty the Snowman" ("Why, I oughta...") and "Winter Wonderland" ("Gone away is da blueboid") are a hoot, and the a cappella "Star of Wonder" is a fascinating obscurity. There are a couple of missteps — the pseudo-Latin rhythm and soprano sax don't contribute much to "We Three Kings," nor does the synth really enhance "Angels We Have Heard on High." But overall, We Three Kings will make an utterly charming addition to anyone's holiday play list.

Love them Roches
I've had this as an audiocassette and I'm happy it's available to download. The Roches have been one of my favorite bands since the early 80s. They have a quirky take on some of the songs - sometimes it works better than others - the Middle-Eastern touches to "We Three Kings" work well - the calypso flavor of "Deck the Halls," not so much. The highlights are the pieces that showcase the sisters' distinctive voices, especially the clear and sweet (yet untrained-sounding) voice of Terre Roche on "Star of Wonder" and "Break Forth O Beautious Heavenly Light." Some of the songs have the flip touches Roches fans have come to love - for instances the Brooklese-accents thrown into "Winter Wonderland." And the tracks "Do You Hear What I hear?" and "For Unto Us a Child is Born" are pure joys. These Jersey girls and former proteges of Paul Simon are always on my holiday music playlists. I only wish that their old concert standard "Hallelujah Chorus" appeared on this collection (it's on another CD).
one glitch with the album download
'adeste fideles' is not 'adeste fideles' at all. it's 'silver bells.' itunes, please fix this. i'll buy the song again if it's fixed, because it's gorgeous, and as much as i love 'silver bells,' i don't need it twice. otherwise, the album is simply delightful.
The Best Christmas Album. Ever.
Seek out this entire album. Listen to it often. Attend a "Roches With a Holiday Twist" concert if at all possible. Watch and hear The Roches singing "Hallelujah Chorus" on their website. Your life will be better. Share the love.
