iTunes Review
Robert Randolph hired T-Bone Burnett to produce his latest album and to educate Randolph on the secular blues music that he was never allowed to listen to as a child. Take Randolph and his Family Band’s instrumental prowess and throw it into the deep blues and you have an amazing combination. Randolph and his band are young men discovering a fresh new terrain, so whether it’s Blind Willie Johnson’s “If I Had My Way” sending Randolph to the Mississippi Delta with guest Ben Harper, or John Lennon’s “I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier Mama,” with guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, it all comes out with a blistering intensity that’s hard to replicate. Prince’s “Walk Don’t Walk” has a restrained funk to its pop-friendly production. Bob Dylan’s “Shot of Love” sounds like the heavens opening with Randolph synching things up to his gospel roots. The originals, written with Burnett, fit in nicely alongside this roots exploration. “Dry Bones” is excellent modern electric blues. The deluxe version comes with three worthy bonus cuts that further drive home the fact that this is one serious collection of musicians likely to be with us for a very long time.
Customer Reviews
slowly finds its soul...
I absolutely love Colorblind, their previous album. With that said, this is pretty much a complete departure from that and Robert acknowledges it; however, I felt the first third of the album was missing something, mainly the passion I felt in their other stuff. As you listen to the album though, the songs eventually find their soul and the album gets better and better. My personal favorites after one listen are probably I Still Belong to Jesus, Don't Change, Dry Bones, and Salvation (which is absolutely beautiful).
I'm not a fan of the segues; honestly felt they drew away from the continuity of the album. Overall, I can see this one growing on me as a whole with me enjoying my initial so-so tracks:) Definitely worth the buy!
Musical Salvation
This album renewed my love for this band. Hearing them live gives this kind of music so much more emotion, and hearing just a small portion of this album live is explosive. Clearly RR&FB knew where they were heading and this product is a great blend of oldies and the freshness of these guys. The seques provide a flashback to the past and help with the soul this blues album has. Somewhat of a departure of the earlier albums but no doubtedely still the great guys who can produce quality music.
Salvation, If I Had My Way, Dry Bones, and Travellin Shoes are just some of the good tunes here.
Listen to it a few times then judge it
This album had me skeptical, but I bought it and I love it. I have their previous album which was a ton of energy. This one has energy in a different aspect. It is just something good to sit down and listen to. Musically you won't find better. He nails pretty much every song. I still belong to jesus blew me away, dry bones awesome!. Alright just buy it.
