iTunes Review

“Happiness is contagious,” Stephen Petree sings towards the end of Weakness Makes You Beautiful — and by that point, you tend to believe him. Petree (the group as well as its namesake) generates upbeat vibes with a luminous ‘80s-influenced sound fusing New Romantic frothiness with a touch of Queen-style pomp. Petree’s ability to combine dance grooves with Christian content is suggestive of MuteMath as well. Beyond these reference points, the band’s slightly giddy, upwardly directed lyrics help them claim a distinct identity. Tracks like “Normal Life” and “Someone to Make Me High” give off an exalted glow thanks to sleek rhythms and swirling textures. “Stars Tipped Over” crystallizes the album’s sense of spiritual breakthrough with its cosmic imagery and onrushing tempo. Petree offers dance-floor homage to feminine beauty in “She Set It” and extols egoless wisdom in the title number. If there’s a defining tune here, it’s “I Can’t Wait,” a dreamy vision of heaven set to a tropical track featuring Shiny Toy Guns vocalist Sisely Treasure.

A great up and coming band!

Petree is definitly on its way to becoming big in my opinion. This cd is further proof. I love the custom made telekeyster that Stephen Petree has, and he utilizes it to its fullest potential. Petree takes elements of U2, Maroon 5, Muse and Jon Mclaughlin (all bands I am very familiar and identify with) and blends all of them into a new, original sound. Great stuff Petree! Can't wait for the sophomore album. Congrats on a great first!

Add Muse + Maroon 5 + Kasabian and you've got one great band!

I had to throw Maroon 5 in there only because Stephen has a "similar" voice. Saw these guys live in Oklahoma City last weekend and was blown away by their live act. The sound was horrible but the band played through it and I think all those paying attention that night knew these guys were destined for much bigger venues than VZD's. Great pop hooks but they're definitely dedicated to solid lyrics and instrumentation that really holds your attention. And after purchasing their album and listening to it on the way home, I realized all the stuff I'd been missing due to the bad sound. Stephen has a custom bult Telekeyster that is like nothing I've ever seen. I sat and tried to keep up with exactly what he was doing with the thing, but couldn't figure out how the thing worked except to say "freakishly" and "incredibly". I see this album making several tv soundtracks and, if people are paying attention, maybe a movie soundtrack or two. I plan on catching them the next time they come through and hope they continue to write catchy tunes while keeping their indie sensabilities about them. Great album guys. Since moving back to the States from Europe, I miss good rock/dance albums like this one.

Don't miss out

Great music. Worth well over the 9.99! Great job Petree!!!
