iTunes Review

David Gilmour, who’d replaced Syd Barrett as Pink Floyd’s guitarist early in its stratospheric career, pays tribute to his predecessor on Wish You Were Here with one soaring guitar solo after another. Indeed the whole album is in part the band’s anguished, glorious tribute to Barrett, the “crazy diamond” whose mental breakdown had ended his active involvement with music. As sprawling as The Dark Side of the Moon which it followed and more focused, Wish used lengthy excursions (the multipart “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Welcome to the Machine”) to wax gorgeous and awe-inspiring. Roger Waters’ lyrics also struck out at rock mythology and the music industry itself; guest Roy Harper’s vocal on “Have a Cigar” (“We’re so happy we can hardly count”) is one of the most mordantly hilarious pieces in all the Floyd catalog. In turn, the disc is as moving and as musically and conceptually complex as anything they recorded.

Wish You Were Here....

Wish You Were Here is my all-time favorite Pink Floyd album. Yes, I said album as I purchased WYWH on vinyl back in September of 1975. Yes, I'm an old fart, but I know my "Floyd". Tough time in my life. This record helped me make it through. There is no better concept work ever recorded in my opinion. Wish I still had the postcard that came with the album.....I actually sent it to a woman I was in love with.....stupid....

So pure, it plays like one long song...

Pink Floyd's music has always been timeless but this album in particular is a classic. As usual, the Floyd journey is deep and introspective and has a kind of hypnotic effect when listening. Very few artists deliver the mood drug like Floyd. Each song in this one has a unique signature but all gels together in the same syrupy vibe. For an added effect, play it on the "Vinyl" app if you have an ipod touch or iphone. It adds the sound quality of vinyl records — taking the digital tracks to that next level. Happy listening.

This is actually my favorite album from pink floyd. You can really tell that these guys had gone through a lot in their lives and they really share that with us in the song 'wish you were here.' I absolutely love some of the effect they add in, like at the end of 'have a cigar' and the beginning of 'wish you were here with the radio fading in and out.

by the way...whats up with all these ppl that are rating albums 1's because they have to pay some extra money for the whole album when they only want one song? and anyway, why would you only get some of the songs off of a pink floyd album...all or nothing for pink floyd
