Album Review

By this stage of the game, you definitely know what you're in for when you plunk down your hard-earned clams for a new Les Claypool-related disc. whether it is Primus, Oysterhead, Sausage, or his solo outings. On the fifth release to be solely credited to Claypool, 2006's Of Whales and Woe, all the expected elements are in place — slippery funk bass, both conventional and unconventional percussion, and whackoid lyrics sung in a narrator-esque style. While Claypool is usually the driving force behind his projects, on Of Whales and Woe, he's thrust even more into the spotlight — very little six-string guitar is featured and when it does, it's Claypool supplying it. As a result, bass is king throughout. Anyone who doubts that Claypool is one of rock's all-time great bassists should check out his playing on such funk-heavy cuts as "One Better" and "Rumble of the Diesel," while Claypool's quirkiness is spotlighted on such tracks as "Back Off Turkey" and "Iowan Girl." Perhaps Claypool summed it up best in the accompanying album press release — "It's almost like Morphine meets old Isley Brothers with some bastardized version of Woody Guthrie." Longtime fans wouldn't have it any other way.

Les Claypool vs. Jupiter's Tectonic Plates

Avast! If you're even looking at these tracks, chances are that you already know what your bowels and tympanic membrane are in for. Be certain that your subwoofer's initial setting is low enough so as to not blow it to bits on the first track. Drop your speakers in the water and this collection will empower a human with the ability to communicate with the world's largest seafaring mammals—and terrestrially...perhaps a Jabberwocky or two. Take the helm. This is a soundscape whose topography could only be mapped by Les Claypool. You wouldnt dare entrust anyone else with that dubious duty!

Of Whales and WOW!

I have been a die hard Les Claypool fan for many a year. The first time I heard his hardcore thumpin' bass I was in love. His goofy and colorful unreal lyrics have kept me comin back. So when i picked up his new album I was psyched. Then when i popped this badboy into the CD player and sat back I understood why I first began to listen to Les Claypool. His originality and oddballness surpasses that of anyone ever before. So if you want a CD that tickles the eardrum go for Of Whales and Woe and exclaim, OF WHALES AND WOW!

Disappointing at best

When i heard that les claypool was coming out with a new album i was thrilled. I could not wait to hear the bass god's new work, but when i bought and listened to the album i was extremely disappointed. First off, all of his bass lines and songs sound the same in this album. Now I understand that Les has his own sound but it's like he took one bass line made 12 variations, made horrible lyrics and added a saxophone and Gabby lala who deserves to be slapped for having anything to do with les claypool. This album is the musical equivelent of a painting by a famous artist that looks like it was made by a 4 year old. Les needed more time for this album or he just needed not to make it. Don't buy this, go buy Primus, Oysterhead, Sausage, or anything else by les just DO NOT buy this.

The most original rock bassist to come along in the '90s was unquestionably Primus' Les Claypool. With his oddball sense of humor and funky playing, Claypool took his varied musical influences and created an invigorating and completely inventive style. The Les Claypool story begins on September 29, 1963, when he was born in Richmond, CA. As a teenager, Claypool met fellow student Kirk Hammett (yes, the Kirk Hammett of Metallica fame), who turned him on to such rock acts as Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and...
