For hardcore early AON fans only!

First of all, this is exclusively EARLY AON - from "Battle" and "(Who's Afraid of) The Art of Noise". If you're expecting Tom Jones or Max Headroom or Peter Gunn to show up, you're quite out of luck. What we get instead is what made AON the band that was an inspiration to generations: jazzy jams and experiments in noise/recording methods. Your old favorites - notably Beatbox, Close (To The Edit) and Moments In Love - are reworked into more permutations than you can shake a stick at. Having said that, a great amount of it is redundant: the 20+ minute version of Close (To The Edit)/Beatbox (they share the same beats) was definite overkill, but you also get wonders like Love Beat and Confession that shine like gems. My very favorite is (Do) Donna (Do), which I had heard elsewhere, but you seriously can't pass up almost 60 early AON songs for $40 US!!! I would recommend this for hardcore fans who are already familiar with AON's work; if you want an overview of their awesome early stuff, find "Battle" or "(Who's Afraid of) The Art of Noise" on eBay!

ahhh, the noise

If you ever thirsted for more from the early Art of Noise, this is a wonderfully compiled set. The noises are familiar but combined in different ways. The sense of exploration in the early tracks is a unique glimpse inside the process of the band, often shrouded in mystery themselves. I'll admit that this collection probably isn't for everyone, but if you appreciate what was being done - especially in the context of the current music scene - it's a refreshing look back without feeling stuck in the time. So much of the album is unreleased material, that even if the song titles sound familiar, the songs themselves won't. If you are a fan and are worried about the redundancy of the tracks ... don't be. Enjoy.

Alternative before "Alternative" was a genre

With so much of this music unavailable since the 1980s this is a Godsend. Disc 4, tracks 1-9 make up the original "Into Battle" EP, never released in the US on CD (Repertoire's 20th Anniversary 2003 release does not contain the original "Beat Box"...this is the only place you can get it, as well as the short version of "Moments in Love"). I'm not sure I'd recommend that an AoN newbie start with this collection as it's a bit much ("Daft" and "The Seduction of Claude Debussy" are better starting points), but if this was the soundtrack of your highschool/college years, buy it and prepare to be transported.

Anne Dudley, Gary Langan, and Paul Morley were members of producer Trevor Horn's in-house studio band in the early '80s before they formed the Art of Noise, a techno-pop group whose music was an amalgam of studio gimmickry, tape splicing, and synthesized beats. The Art of Noise took material from a variety of sources: hip-hop, rock, jazz, R&B,...
