Album Review
Chris Rice, admired by would-be songwriters for over a decade, continued to stretch his legs musically on 2007's What a Heart Is Beating For while referring to his Christianity in smaller, more understated doses. It's impossible not to draw comparisons to James Taylor on tracks like "Lemonade" and "Kids Again," but then Rice takes a turn toward John Mayer or David Gray with unabashed confidence. Lyrical messages seem to follow the advice he offers politicians — "You Don't Have to Yell." The Christian heart of Rice's songwriting is a little further from the surface than on his pre-Amusing work, though it undoubtedly continues to influence his craft.

Quite a Progression
I've been a fan of Rice's since he released "Past the Edges" in the late 90s. I was somewhat worried when he left Rocketown records, but it has really allowed Rice to find a signature style. As much as I loved "Smell the Color 9," it seemed like Rice couldn't decide what he wanted to be. Now, after "Amusing" and "What A Heart Is Beating For," Rice has emerged as one of the better adult contemporary artists around, with a nice dose of Jazz influence, aswell. For his old fans, there are still plenty of classic, old Chris Rice songs; and despite Rice's new audience, he does not tone down his Christian themes. At the very least, I have to suggest buying Sad Song, the title track, Love Is Gonna Break Through, and Sneakin' Into Heaven.
Like his old stuff better
I miss the old Chris Rice music. I felt he was leaps and bounds above every other CCM artist and am sad that Chris has changed directions. This album is just ok. If your looking for a strong Christian message you won't find it here. I still am a Chris Rice fan but I'll stick to Deep Enough to Dream, Go Light Your World, Come to Jesus, etc. and just hope one day he decides to make another album with a stronger christian content for the fans who miss it!
Chris Rice continues to deliver as a talented song craftsman
Another beautifully-crafted CD from Mr. Rice, both immediately accessible and deep enough to draw you into its layers over time. Highly recommended!
