Album Review
Those looking for more of the bouncy pop Justin Currie used to effortlessly churn out as frontman/singer/songwriter for Del Amitri may need to reconsider before picking up his debut solo release. While Currie's pop instincts remain strong, this album of lovelorn ballads stays locked in mush mode for the entirety of its 45 minutes. While that might initially be a deterrent to some, once you get used to the concept, the listener can appreciate it for what it is: a sumptuous set of lovely, meticulously arranged songs, sung with earnest emotion and empathy. Comparisons to much of McCartney's love tunes are in order. Imagine an album filled with variations on "My Love" and you're close to what Currie creates here. The melodies are simple yet elegant, the production clean and crisp with few signs of the sappy gunk this could easily have turned into. The singer's vocals are instantly recognizable, but in this format of music from the heart they seem even more impressive, as he's obviously connected to the material and not aiming for chart success. When he reaches into the higher end of his register on "Where Did I Go?" accompanied by strings and a somewhat surprising strangulated guitar solo, the drama is riveting. It will take a few spins for this to kick in, but when it does, small variations on the piano based format such as the gritty guitar that jumps out of "Out of My Control" and the squawking, David Bowie-styled sax in "Something in That Mess" become gripping interludes in the introspective mood. Clearly this material wouldn't have cut it on a Del Amitri album, at least all of it together, but the consistent tone works to this disc's advantage. It's a perfect soundtrack for rainy days and Sundays, or as accompaniment to anyone who has ever lost a love and needed to hear those sentiments expressed with honesty, sympathy and warmth.

A self indulgent mess
Please tell me you were tripping when you wrote how brilliant this album is. I've been a huge Del's fan since day one, have seen them live on numerous occasions, and have met and interviewed Justin. But this album is weak from start to finish and I liken it to a funeral death dirge written by a first time songwriter. There is no doubt that justin Currie has one of the best voices in music period, and I am especially a fan of alot of Del Amitri's slower tunes like 'Tell her" and "Be my downfall" etc. But these songs are simply boring and go nowhere. I'm bummed, and was expecting so much more from someone with so much talent. Mr Currie you owe me 11 bucks.... Back to the studio you go and show us what we all know your're capable of....
AMAZING, FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT!!
I have been a HUGE Del Amitri fan since the early 90's when they played the Taste of Chicago and many other gigs in the Midwest. I have avidly followed them through the years and have bought every album and sometimes more than one of the same album as I couldn't bear to share with my husband! This is one of the best albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I can't wait to see Justin in New York in December! My favorite song is Walking Through You, kind of reminds me a little of sleep instead of teardrops. Another favorite is If I Ever Loved You. Having said that, there isn't a bad song on the entire album! LOVE IT!
How in the world has this guy not made it big in the USA
The lead singer for the group Del Amitri has released his solo debut and it doesnt disappoint. Justin Currie has written some of the best songs i have ever heard and it seems as if no one else is listening here in the states....If you want to hear what music should sound like get this CD it is better than any of the CRAP thats out there....then do yourself a favor and track down old Del Amitri.....
