music that honors its roots
Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) is a band that hearkens back to a simpler time in the indie scene when dissonant octaves, droning bass and heartfealt, emotional lyrics weren't drowned out by screaming or double-bass drumming that we find with most self-proclaimed emo bands today. we can only hope that this is the true rebirth of the midwest emo sound that originally drew us all into the fold, ala Mineral, Applesead Cast, and American Football. What it Takes to Move Forward is by far the band's most mature and focused effort, which is as it should be, considering this is also the band's first full length album. of particular note is the fourth track, It Happened Because You Left which boldy adds layer after layer of sublime instrumental riffs before the vocals take over at the three minute mark. few modern bands have the talent or patience for such a musical statement. the band experiments with instrumentation as well with mixed results. With Your Greatest Fears Realized, You Will Not Be Comforted, features a banjo or mandolin, trumpet, and cello and is also the record's weakest track. all in all, a solid, debut effort for a very promising band out of Michigan.
