Album Review

The guests are fewer (though Frank Sinatra, Jr., sings one song), but the oddities go on, with "11 MPH," a review of the JFK assassination, and "Dad I'm in Jail," a proud rant by David Was. Also included: the hits "Spy in the House of Love" and "Walk the Dinosaur."

Fans Of Gnarls Barkley Shouldn't Miss Out On This

Though Don Was has gotten more attention as a producer (which he deserves), let’s not forget the work he did with faux-brother David blending elements of experimental jazz, hip-hop, traditional R&B and pre-rock popular vocals which they do to great effect here. Check out the best songs The Stylistics/Spinners never did – “Anytime Lisa” and “Love Can Be Bad Luck” (co-written with Marshall Crenshaw), the great “Spanish Harlem”-like/Drifters-like/Willy DeVille-like “Shadow & Jimmy,” the somber opening track “Somewhere In America There’s a Street Named After My Dad” and the album’s second single “Anything Can Happen.” That’s on top of the hits “Walk the Dinosaur,” Frank Sinatra’s guest vocal on the apropos “Wedding Vows in Vegas” and Don Was’ free association hit “Dad I’m In Jail,” and the I think even better “Earth To Doris.” It’s no accident this was on Rolling Stones’ Greatest Albums of the 80’s List. Now it’s time for you to find out why.

Funky.....Like Sweet Potato Pie!

I have owned this since it came out in 88 and just recently repurchased it. if your diggin nasty funky music that takes you back old school then this essential !

Was (Not Was) first gained notice for a dance single called "Wheel Me Out" in 1980. Their first album, Was (Not Was) (1981), did not reach the charts, but its...
