iTunes Review
2007’s City of Echoes concerned some long-time Pelican fans (too much nuance! not enough heft!) while winning the band new admirers (such nuance for a “metal” band! so accessible for a “post-metal” band!). Their fourth studio album might seal the deal for both camps. What We All Come to Need is more dynamic, more melodic, and somehow heavier and more powerful at the same time. “Glimmer” does indeed glimmer, more than roar, even with rumbling, monstrous bass lines; “The Creeper” builds on dark atmospherics that give way to coiling, grinding guitar riffs that ultimately imply a bittersweet denouement (guest guitarist Greg Anderson of Sunn 0))) surely adds drama here). Two other tracks comprise a quartet of visceral standouts: “Ephemeral” packs more machine-gun wallop here than on the EP of the same name, and “Specks of Light” races along, guitars buzzing like hornets on speed, only to slowly spiral to a close as it creeps to the eight- minute mark. The final cut breaks typical Pelican rules and features the vocals — not too prominently, one might note — of Allen Epley (Shiner, Life and Times) in a neo-ballad, “Final Breath.”
Customer Reviews
Intense
Pelican is the anomaly in today's music scene. The "post rock" scene has many great bands, however Pelican has the "it" factor. The music brings up different emotions, moods, and daydreams galore. One moment I'm daydreaming about how cool I am, rock climbing without safety ropes (I've never done it), saving someone from a burning building (never, hate being hot), the next moment I picture myself alone, lying in the fetal position, crying in the rain (probably have once or twice). I love the power, intensity and beautiful melodies. This band rules!!!
For the imagination
Perfect music for when your at a block in your creative thinking. The music really lets my mind wander in to places it usally doesn't go.
WOW!!! I Like.....
The music of PELICAN's "What We All Come To Need" reminds me of of ALICE IN CHAINS, COLD, HUM and SWERVEDRIVER except without vocals. Love the quality of the music after listening thru 1 to 8. Playing it over again and again. With an invigorating beat, growling guitars and crunching bass doing its rhyme and distortion. A music that's hard rock but at the same time sophisticated and a tempo that grooves (kinda mesmerized me a bit). Not a big PELICAN fan but love their take on the grunge/metal sound for the new millennium. The songs Glimmer, The Creeper and Specks of Light roars at you, then after that the other songs are more lounge like. More like chillin' to the beat. And finally, the song Final Breath is the one song for this group to think about. If there interrested in making a new album with a lead singer or featured guest singer. Can't wait!
