iTunes Review

No one quite knew what hip-hop soul might be when Mary J. Blige's debut appeared in 1992, but the young singer schooled everyone quickly. What's the 411 is R&B with the street edge restored; there is little old-school showbiz in the stripped-down piano-with-beats "Real Love." Blige here is as likely to deliver lyrics in a staccato, rap-informed blitz as she was to drop melismas. This new sound is irresistible, down to its acknowledgement of roots on the Rufus/Chaka Khan oldie "Sweet Thing." With this album, Blige offers the blueprint that many singers would follow over the next years, though no one quite caught her mercurial personal style.

OUR CURRENT LEGEND FIRST LP REMIXED

by bootney lee farnsworth

This album is classic in the original and also in this remix version of the album. To me the highlight is the You Remind Me (Remix) that is also the version they use in the video. The album is great and should be a full album but what is here is still a great buy!!!!!

Sometimes, remix albums don't turn out so well. Remixed songs can turn out to sound like the original was smashed up in a blender. Here, though, you can still see remnants of the originals, but with a different twist. The songs are tweaked so slightly but it gives a great new effect. Slow Down wasn't remixed; You Don't Have to Worry wasn't on the original album. Other than that, all of the songs from Mary J. Blige's debut are on here remixed. The best mixes on here, in my opinion, were Real Love, Reminisce, Changes I've Been Going Through, What's the 411. You Don't Have to Worry is another personal favorite.

Mary at her best!

1992-1999 was Mary J. Blige's best era, the one where she tried to drop what happened in the past and move on, but the songs were very soulful and street. 2000-today (2008), she seems to have lost that, and has too much glamour sometimes. Real Love (Remix) is by far the best song on this remix album, where she shows her street side with some good raps. Sweet Thing (Remix) shows more soul and sweetness. Reminisce (Remix) is so old skool, and Mary just does her thing. I would like to see the old Mary again!

When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, critics and fans alike were floored by its powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap sound that glanced off of the pain and grit of Mary J. Blige's Yonkers, NY, childhood. Called alternately the new Chaka Khan or new Aretha...
