Great melodies + incredible skill = Beautiful music
This album is one of those rare beauties where everything is perfect. Neil Zaza is an insanely skilled guitarist, but on top of that he is a true musician. Most shredders these days have forgotten that the guitar is a MUSICAL instrument, not a computer. It may look cool if you can burp out 200 notes a minute, but it's not saying anything musically, and it gets boring. Neil Zaza has that musical integrity that’s missing in many other modern players. Not only is he incredibly fast and accurate, but his songs are hauntingly beautiful, at times even vocal. Some are plain, good ol' rock or blues, and some are ballad. You know when you listen that Zaza is playing from his soul, and that's what is important, not how popular he is or how many records he sells. I particularly like Something Anything, Cinematic, In My Dreams, Danza, and Before the Throne. Plus players like Peter Frampton, Michael Anthony, and Steve Smith are featured. The beautiful music, great skill, and all-star players make this album perfect.
Sure...he has Vai's sound...
Of course there are going to be comparisons to Vai--after all, Zaza DOES have Vai's guitar sound. However, he also has Vai's heart; and that's not something that, my being a Vai fan since the Zappa days, I was ever expecting to ever say! My point is this: Zaza has the chops and the heart and soul to be counted amongst the greats. Unfortunately for him, since he does sound so much like Vai, I doubt he will ever get the recognition he deserves. That's a plain shame.
A New World Composer
Neil Zaza has done it again with a fantastic group of songs that are sure to tantalize the serious music lover. From blues and jazz straight to heavy medal, this guy can do it all, and does many times over. My favorite tracks include Purple Plush and My Dearest.
