When the Devil’s Loose is a gorgeous slow-burner of an album filled with spare and soulful songs backed by guitar, mournful piano, light bass, and slow and steady drumming. Some tunes are wrapped in soothing reverb, (“A Slow Parade,” “To the Morning,” “False River”) and others benefit from moody and atmospheric production (“On the Moon,” “The Coal Hits the Fire”), yet all of them convey a feeling of intimacy and subtle power. The tempos are slow yet never lethargic and the songs are lovingly crafted and emotionally charged. A mix of vulnerability and confidence, Bondy’s understated, well-worn voice grabs hold tightly and proves an ideal match for his melancholy melodies. He sings slowly and clearly, allowing the vivid imagery and rich symbolism of his lyrics to make their full impact. When the Devil’s Loose is the second solo release for Bondy, formerly of the band Verbena, and it’s a mesmerizing work of stark beauty and quiet intensity.

some reviewers have no clue when making reference...
c'mon! saying it's bondy doing dylan?! get a clue and make a more accurate point. how 'bout lee hazlewood or gordon lightfoot?... as the frontman of verbena, scott never got his just due. trust me, i saw them live several times and he was one of the few full-blooded genuine rock stars i've ever seen. most of them just act the part. aa bondy is just him doing his thing; writing great songs. the guy channels it plain and simple. american hearts was beyond great and the devil's loose offers an evolution on his soulful sometimes-dark-sometimes-drunk/dreamy americana. AA hides behind nothing in his production or lyrics. i am not a starstruck person at all, but i would really like to give this man a hug and have a whisky with him. his music makes my life a little better.

i love this guy's voice. great songs. simple production. cool up there with M. Ward or Eddie Skuller. I like this album's consistent emotion throughout and now I'd like to see a live show. Really good work!
Bondy at his prime
I was a huge verbena fan and i was very disappointed when they split up, but now since scott bondy has reborn himself as aa bondy im an even bigger fan of his song writing in general. AA to me is the our generations folk legend hands down, this album is just as good as american hearts but their both poetic songwriting folk perfection! This is a must have for aspiring songwrighters like myself.
