Album Review

The artwork for Where It All Begins, Lalah Hathaway's second Stax album, features a striking collage of her father Donny’s album covers, with Lalah cleverly inserted in place of her father on most of them. In addition to family photos scattered throughout the booklet, Lalah maintains a looking-back theme with a naturally heart-rending version of her father’s “You Were Meant for Me,” the original of which was issued as a single a few months prior to his tragic passing. Lalah also reaches back 20 years for a hushed but powerful remake of her own “I’m Coming Back,” her fourth charting single, first released in 1991. Otherwise, Where It All Begins picks up where 2008’s Self Portrait left off, though the pop-R&B-type moves — buzzing synthesizers, harder beats — are a little more pronounced. “If You Want To,” a gleaming disco-funk track co-written by Rahsaan Patterson, is the best of that lot; the remainder of the album’s highlights are relatively subdued, led by the gliding, atmospheric title track — a stunning throwback to lyrically inward, sonically otherworldly soul-jazz of the ‘70s. There’s also a pleasant surprise in the form of “Wrong Way,” an uplifting number driven by bright acoustic guitar and a big chorus. It could easily fit into the playlist of a mature-rock radio station.

Awesome!

I couldn't wait till this came out and I am so happy with it! It has a great fresh feel to it. It is definitely Lalah but with a new spin to it! Every body definitely needs to buy this if you are a true Lalah fan!

GREATEST SOUL ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

First off, it's a vocal masterpiece...just when you thought you heard her do everything imaginable with that rich magic tone, she pulls out even more colors to paint with on this album...it's like a choir in one woman...gorgeously arranged as only she can. Second, it's an ALBUM...not just a collection of random songs. She opens with an urban bang on Strong Woman about a mother, a lover, a friend who deserves respect and appreciation...and she closes with Dreamland, a lullaby from mother to daughter telling her she can be anything she wants to be when she grows up. All this ties in with the title song and the beautiful artwork...LALAH lets us in on Where It All Began for her...it's about family and the LOVE that MAKES a family. The love songs that make up this album are...simply phenomenal! Club jams like My Everything & If You Want To...irresistable soul grooves like Small of My Back & Always Love You...and of course, her legendary ballad work on Lie To Me & This Could Be Love...and just when you think it can't get any better...she does a brillaint cover of her father's classic You Were meant For Me and a new reading of her own concert classic I'm Coming Back that may be the greatest performance of her career. Still...there is one more turn she takes on this CD...a Carly Simon-esque pop/rocker called Wrong Way that will take you delightfully by surprise. Raising the expectations of what we can expect from a Soul Music Album in the 2000's and beyond, Lalah has delivered a Grammy-worthy classic with an eternal shelf life. The First Daughter of Soul Indeed!

Gets better & better

Incredible album from Lalah Hathaway! Unbelievable follow up to her 2008 album "Self Portrait". At the time I considered SP to be her best work to date, however, Where It All Begans, has surpassed the love I have for that album. Artists like Lalah are so refreshing in today's pop-driven music industry. She's proof that you can be successful without compromising the intregrity of your music in an attempt to make a quick buck. Lalah thank you for making good, honest, refreshing music. One of the better R&B/Soul albums of 2011! Hopefully she'll get some recognition come Grammy time.

The daughter of the great Donny Hathaway, Lalah Hathaway made a good impression with her debut recording, Lalah Hathaway, in 1990. She not only displayed poise, confidence, and good technique, but was also versatile enough to do more than just light urban contemporary ballads. Her stage shows included jazz, pre-rock pop, and even gospel, and Hathaway later appeared on BET doing jazz and fusion. After her second and final album for Virgin, 1994's A Moment, she went on a lengthy hiatus, returning in...
