iTunes Review

On their major label debut, the Zac Brown Band aim for the sweet spot between ‘70s-style Southern rock and 21st-Century country-pop and for the most part they hit their target dead-on. The Foundation manages to showcase the considerable writing and instrumental skills of the group without losing its unpretentious feel. The music here avoids rebel posturing or hat-act romantic gush in favor of plain-spoken storytelling and unvarnished acoustic-based musicianship. After years of touring, the group is adept at everything from turbo-charged bluegrass (“Mary”) to breezy Caribbean ditties (“Where the Boat Leaves From”) and goofy comedy pieces (“It’s Not OK,” “Sic ‘Em On a Chicken”). Brown’s lead vocals display a James Taylor-like warmth on the melancholy “Highway 20 Ride” and the uplifting “Free.” Tasty touches abound, with Jimmy De Martini’s fiddle adding blazing licks to “Mary” and mournful accents to “Jolene.” Radio-friendly tunes like “Chicken Fried” and “Different Kind of Fine” are fairly predictable but redeemed by crisp arrangements and an overall sincerity. Solidly rendered with plenty of personality, The Foundation captures a hard-working heartland combo with something to prove and the talent to back it up.

Customer Reviews

Wow

What a fantastic new release - You can really hear the band gel together on almost all of these tracks. Really sounds like a bunch of good old country boys just jamming on the back porch.
Awesome lyrics on the songs - Whatever It Is may be one of the best love songs ever - that's no exaggeration.
If you like straight ahead country with a bluegrass feel, you need to buy this album.
And this is coming from a city boy from Massachusetts.
Great job Zac - already looking forward to the next album!

Great!

I don't often write reviews, but this one deserves it. This has to be one of the best, most solid country albums of the year. With undertones of classic Alabama and bluegrass but with a modern sound, it doesn't get much better than this. Just goes to show, "you gotta have a fiddle in the band."

These guys will go far.

WOW!!

I'm a 50ish recent convert to "Country Music". This band and album defy categorization. Chicken Fried was what caught my ear, and convinced me to preorder the album. All the songs are terrific. Great musicianship and harmonies throughout and the lyrics are fresh. If this band doesn't make an appearance at the CMAs next year, I'll eat my Ipod.
