Customer Reviews
How can you not love music that is both smart and great.
Jonathan shows his geeky side, but never lets up on the great music, tight vocals and fantastic humor. I was hooked the minute I heard Skullcrusher Mountain. Jonathan manages to get inside the head of an evil super genius and make you feel the pain of unrequited love for his captured love interest. In I crush everything you can actually feel how lonely it is to be a giant sea monster with lyrics and music that reminds me strongly of the best that Barenaked Ladies could ever produce. Mandlebrot Set actually makes a mathematical concept fun and interesting. Sure everyone knows a fractal when you see one but how many people can make a recitation of a Mandlebrot sets function into a hook that you can’t get out of your head. If you are just a little bit geeky or just like to think you’re geeky, buy this man’s work. You will not be disappointed.
Not your everyday folkie ...
I heard SkullCrusher Mountain at the end of an Escape Pod and had to find out who this man was as soon as I got home. How can anyone write such consistently off-base lyrics, with such rhthym, timing, production, melody? Half the intrique is in his folksiness, and the great oddness comes in the paradoxical juxtapositions topic and style. This is well worth your download. Fun, entertaining, great to listen to, and definitely not what you hear everyday
Lyrical Resurrection
Esoteric? Clever? Quirky? Whichever word you chose to describe them, there is simply no comparison to Jonathan Coulton's unique approach to "The Song." Unlike the mainstream pop album, Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow does shy away from topics of social or material interest and thrusts into the realm of fractals and giant squid. Coulton's mastery of crafting geek condition into ballads we can all appreciate isn't done by hardcore riffs and rumpus, but rather with melodicas, mandolins, and monkeys. Without a doubt, Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow is the welcome change for anyone growing weary of mainstream pop music, or the holy grail for geeks sitting at their Macs, developing their own warrior robot races.
