iTunes Review

In putting together a soundtrack for his adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, the beloved children’s book by Maurice Sendak, director Spike Jonze commissioned Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to compose original songs for the film. The “Kids” are a cast of indie rockers assembled by O that includes members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Liars, Deerhunter, and the Raconteurs, as well as a chorus of actual children. Like the story itself, the album is sweet and tender (“All Is Love,” “Hideaway,” “Food Is Still Hot”) with moments of wild abandon thrown in (“Rumpus,” “Animal,” “Heads Up”). About half of the tracks are moving instrumentals that revolve around acoustic guitar and light humming, while the other half are fully orchestrated folk-pop songs with sing-along choruses, hand claps, and exuberant “woo-hoos.” It’s a wonderful combination that beautifully captures the innocence, playfulness, and mystery of being a child. The well-written and arranged songs also work well as a work of art independent of the film. In short, it’s a joyous, heartfelt rumpus pleasing to kids and adults alike.

I wouldn't give it half a star.

I really like this.

(Five star relative to all music I've listened to; this is a good one, folks.)

The movie was deeper and more thought-provoking than I thought it would be, and the soundtrack augmented it. WtWTA is not a film of the book; it can't be, since the book is made up of some ten sentences.

When the trailers were hitting the streets, Arcade Fire's anthem "Wake Up" was used to promote it. I know why; Karen O composed a beautiful, ethereal, resonant vocal track to go with the film, and it was intensely reminiscent of Arcade Fire's music. As the end credits rolled I watched for them, thinking they'd actually done the music. It wasn't Arcade Fire; it was Karen O and The Kids.

There is nothing disappointing about this score, any more than there was anything disappointing about the movie. It's a lovely, sweet and warming album, and I am glad I paid the ten lousy stinking bucks or so to get it. It's worth that, and much more besides.

To be specific, tracks such as "All is Love", "Capsize", "Worried Shoes" and "Hideaway" are gorgeous. "All is Love" is exuberant and filled with joy; "Capsize" is the adventure of setting out and running away - or leaving home, as all children must one day; "Worried Shoes" is a rich, evocative reflection on mistakes; and "Hideaway" is a sweet lament.

There aren't mistakes on this album; there are no bad tracks. Slap down your cash and behold, or belisten; relax, and enjoy.
