iTunes Review

After the surprise success of his 1990 solo debut, The Winding Sheet, Mark Lanegan, the singer for the Screaming Trees, worked for several years on the follow-up Whiskey for the Holy Ghost. Where Sheet had been casual and skeletal, Ghost was intensely layered and methodical. The expertise of multi-instrumentalist / producer Mike Johnson ensured a dark uniformity that made the entire album feel like one long tour of Hades. Lanegan sings from his deepest end and growls like a cornered tiger throughout, building towards catharsis from the onset. "The River Rise" sets the dreary tone, only to be bludgeoned by the punishing feedback of "Borracho" before settling in for the campfire intimacy of "House a Home" where a violin streaks across the lonely desert floor. "Carnival," "Riding the Nightingale," and "Shooting Gallery" paint further desperate pictures. These are blues songs with modern situations and implications, the sound of desperate addicts seeking salvation amongst the cultural detachment and ruin of the perennial outsider.

One of the best albums of the 90's

This album is in my top-ten of all time. Mark Lanegan's voice is the featured instrument throughout. It will make you shiver. The style of music can't accurately be described because he invented it with this album and has not recaptured it since. Don't get me wrong, Lanegan's other albums are great, but something about Whiskey for the Holy Ghost sets it apart. It is impossible to compare this album to other artists because it is so unique. The only option is to compare it to other Lanegan albums, and this one is his best. It is dead-slow rock and roll music, totally blues, somewhat religious, very emotional, entirely flawless.

An American Masterpiece

My wife gifted me the Winding Sheet and Whiskey for the Holy Ghost because I really liked the Screaming Trees, especially their SST work. Lanegan's work here is rich and varied and difficult to typecast. Every track on the collection is unique, powerful, subtle, uplifting, depressing and fantastic. His voice is truly amazing and the lyrics build powerful visuals. This work is nothing like the Screaming Trees, which is further testament to Lanegan's impressive range of style. the best vocalist of our generation

Nothing fancy, just some guys putting down some beautiful, haunting melodies behind the voice of a guy who's been chain-smoking all day and gargling razor blades inbetween. One of the most consistent and mesmorizing records in recent memory. If it has Mark Lanegan's name on the cover, just buy it. You won't be dissapointed.

Mark Lanegan's solo albums are sufficiently dissimilar in tone from those of his regular group, Screaming Trees, to make listeners wonder where his true interests lie. His records often employ a much more acoustic tone, and address much more serious, personal concerns. Despite ample critical acclaim, Lanegan always kept the Screaming Trees his primary concern (that is, until their breakup). The original plan for Lanegan's first solo recording was to do an EP of blues songs with Nirvana's Kurt Cobain...
