iTunes Review
The artists formerly of Prince & The Revolution deliver their first album since 1998’s Girl Brothers. Where that one found Wendy & Lisa veering further from dance pop, White Flags of Winter Chimneys finalizes the divorce, embracing gossamer songs reminiscent of 4AD’s This Mortal Coil. The title is a reference to Joni Mitchell’s 1976 epic Hejira and like that album, White Flags shares a pensive melancholia with lyrics musing on more dark and complicated aspects of the times. In “Balloon” Lisa sings about finding bliss in her balloon, a good fit for 21st century urban dwellers building bubbles around their lives to keep a safe distance from the troubled world outside. “Invisible” drives a bit faster with a pulsing beat, and when she sings “Shine like when you were mine” it’s hard to not take it as a nod to Prince. Speaking of references, “Salt & Cherries (MC5)” not only references the Motor City Five, but the guitars here rock hard in a Fred “Sonic” Smith like tribute. Conversely, the featherweight guitars on the title track strum and chime with pillowy softness before flirting with chorus-heavy ‘80s goth in the closing “Sweet Suite (Beginning At the End).”

A Beautiful Cyclical Journey
"White Flags of Winter Chimneys" is a wonderful treat for your ears from Wendy and Lisa. The first track "Balloon" is a beautiful and hopeful song for our time. "Invisible" is my favorite with its powerful lyrics and great time changes. After "Ever After" comes the funky 70s rock of "Salt & Cherries" with some great driving guitar work from Wendy. "Niagara Falls" and "Red Bike" are two gems that are followed up by a wonderful acoustic guitar song of "You and I." The title track of "White Flags of Winter Chimneys" is an eclectic mix of guitar, drums, and keyboards and is mesmerizing to listen to that afterwards you'll appreciate the great thought that went into the design. Lastly, "Sweet Suite (Beginning at the End)" brings the journey back to the beginning in its final measures and comes full circle to make your journey cyclical. The mantra of "its all about the music" really rings true in this fine work by two extremely talented ladies.
A masterpiece from master musicians!!!
So you think you don't know the music of Wendy and Lisa? Turn on the radio and you'll hear them with everyone from Prince to Sheryl Crow. Turn on the TV and you'll their score for Heroes. They've had 4 critically acclaimed albums through the years and now they deliver their 5th album White Flags of Winter Chimneys. If any million selling established artist would have released this album their would already be Album of the Year buzz. But this album comes from two brilliant musicians who have made an album of music that they wanted to make without worrying about if some suit can hear a single or not. The album opens with the beautiful, yet haunting Balloon that enters the listener and floats into your every molecule of your soul. The rocking Invisible is next challenging the listener with time changes and powerful vocals rarely heard on radio these days. Every song after runs through various music styles and emotions from sexy punk rock (Salt and Cherries) to pure emotion (You and I). The album concludes with the nothing short of epic, Sweet Suite (Beginning at the End). If this last track is the beginning of the end, I can't wait to see where this new beginning leads the brilliant music of Wendy and Lisa in the future.
