iTunes Review

In the mood for a change, Ben Harper suspended recording with his usual backing band, Innocent Criminals, and teamed up with Relentless7, a trio of Austin to L.A. musicians who contributed to his Both Sides of the Gun release. Harper, in turn, sings with an extra looseness that points up his strengths as a vocalist. “Up to You Now” carries a genuine ache in its crescendos while the guitars blast behind him in spare, agitated strokes. “Shimmer & Shine” captures the perfect balance between rock and pop with an attractive hook. “Lay There & Hate Me” jams out on more traditional funk. “Why Must You Always Dress in Black” delivers the electric blues without pretension, eliciting the ghosts of the Mississippi Delta as well as modern practitioners like Johnny Winter. Blues and balladry are Harper’s fallbacks and as a gifted songwriter he can transform the expected into something very touching. “Skin Thin” is sweetly orchestrated. “Faithfully Remain” has the sound of an old soul classic delivered as an eloquent tribute to an era that remains buried deep in Harper’s musical soul.

Not Sure Where I Stand!

I Love Ben, I Love the Innocent Criminals...so believe me when I say, it was going to be a hard sell for me to see a new band! Do I like the album? Yes. Do I play it as much as previous albums? No. So where does that leave me in this review......must have, must listen, but don't expect the past...but respect the future!

I just listened to his set on Austin CIty Limits and had to download this album. I have always enjoyed listening to Ben Harper's music but have never really been too impressed with his albums; they have always sounded too much like college rock for me. His set on Asutin CIty Limits was epic, though. This new band he is playing with is unreal. Ben kills it on the dobro. Hope the album lives up to the live set. If you haven't checked out his ACL recording be sure to do so, I gaurantee it will impress.

A nice surprise!

I've been a Ben Harper fan for quite sometime and i'm always pleasantly surprised with what he creates. This release is definitely a more 'rock' album than his previous music. Some of the better tracks are "Up To You Now", "Why Must You Always Dress In Black" and "Shimmer & Shine". Those particular tracks really let Ben and his band The Relentless 7 rock out! Some of the slower tracks such as "Skin Thin" and "Fly One More Time" are also great songs and show Ben's softer side that he has shown on other releases in the past. This is well worth getting!
