Album Review

D.I.Y. superstars Dispatch have made a name for themselves by embodying the punk aesthetic of doing it yourself without corporate intervention, even though their music owes nothing to the sound of punk itself. In fact, given the songs on Who Are We Living For?, a more ideal audience for their funk/world/jazz/R&B/rap-tinged rock & roll is graduated Dave Matthews Band listeners: people who enjoy that band's eclecticism but have been turned off by their degree of media saturation. Lyrically, most of Who Are We Living For? is rife with social commentary, addressing leftist social issues that run the gamut from homelessness, violence, and justice. It's not surprising from a band that was arrested in 2000 for protesting the Boston presidential debates because of the exclusion of Ralph Nader. The end result sounds like a more politicized, eclectic 311, and even if many of the songs are ultimately undistinguished, Who Are We Living For? is an album made by and for the collegiate rock crowd.

Customer Reviews

Fantasic and often overlooked.

Chad, Braddigan, and Pete have an almost magical touch that can turn out tunes in almost any genra, tempo, and style. This CD is wildly different than their other CDs and really showcases their abilities. It is somewhat collected and introspective with such slow and beautiful bits as "Lightning", "Prince of Spades" and "Headlights", but can still rock out with titles like "Open Up", "Even" and "Time Served" that make you wanna get up and jam. Displaying their characteristic ability to play just about anything, they also manage to calm things down with sweet tunes like "Carry You", arguably one of their most romantic pieces. I've had their CDs for years, and the titles on this one are some of the most memorable that they've put out. Don't miss their primarily instrumental tracks like "D. Bits" and "Parade Speed"; despite lacking the poetic and sometimes cryptic lyrics Dispatch is known for, they still merit repeated listens. Overall, an album I'd highly recommend to anyone who got hooked on Dispatch with "The General" and wants to explore the group more, this CD showcases a more mature sound than we're sometimes used to. Don't be surprised if you find yourself playing this CD over and over again in the car or around the house, or find yourself belting "Even" in the shower. Not to be missed!

dispatch is incredible

i would suggest this album and bang bang simply because they are a huge part of my life...this is music which brings out the best of people..take it from me this adds not only to my music collection but to my life

For the true Dispatch fan

To truly apreciate this album you have to know BANG BANG and SILENT STEEPLES pretty intimately as well as their other previous albums. You also should know that at this point the band members were struggling to get along which makes for some heated tracks. Pete Francis (Heimbold) sticks to their roots with Headlights and Carry You while Chad Stokes (Urmston) goes for a new sound with Time Served and Even. Braddigan (Brad Corrigan) also takes a turn with his song spades. For even a true Dispatch fan this album takes a little getting used to (it has some harsh lyrics and violent guitar solos) but is shows their darker side.

The New England jam band Dispatch was comprised of Brad Corrigan, Pete Heimbold, and Chad Urmston, who first grouped together while attending Middlebury College in Vermont. The young band debuted in 1996 with Silent Steeples and returned a year later with Bang Bang. Both albums displayed the trio's three-part harmonies and cheeky, college-friendly mix of Barenaked Ladies-style acoustic pop and folk-rock, with some reggae and funk influences tossed in for good measure. June 2000 saw the issue of Four-Day...
