iTunes Review

Now in mid-life, John Bon Jovi waxes philosophical on Have a Nice Day – sometimes in a surprisingly wiseass manner (the title track, whose twist on the old greeting mirrors the set’s smirking cover art), and occasionally even bitterly (the narrator of “I Want to Be Loved” and his survey of domestic fissures). “Welcome to Wherever You Are” is a cheery affirmation of each listener’s place in the world, while “Bells of Freedom” and “Last Man Standing” return to the theme of self-belief that fueled the ’80s mega-hit “Livin’ on a Prayer.” In fact, little has changed musically – save for the roots-rock turn of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home Again,” also included in a country-radio-aimed duet with Jennifer Nettles – but at this point, the band brings a comfortable hominess to their well-seasoned sound.
