Peter Gabriel fans will LOVE this!!!
This is the first single from Peter Gabriel's project Big Blue Ball, over 15 years in the making, i found this quote from Peter about the project: BIG BLUE BALL PRESS QUOTE from Peter Gabriel We had a dream to bring together writers, poets and musicians from all over the world to create music for one week in the summer. We made it happen first in ’91 and then again in ’92. We invited all sorts of people and timed the event to coincide with the English WOMAD festival as so many great musicians were going to be in the country for that event. For each week we had a set number of Real World albums to record to help underwrite the budget, but there was lots of time and studio space available in which all the musicians could collaborate in all sorts of wonderful ways. By the second year the ‘Recording Week’, as it had become known, became a ‘bring your own studio’ party; so along with our six studios, people were setting up studios on the lawn, in the garage and in their bedrooms. Many connections were made that led to new music for the artists’ own projects, but I think the best stuff was left for us. I had invited Karl Wallinger to join me as a Co-MC in my studio. I thought his skills in writing and playing so many instruments would be a real asset. He was an endless source of creative ideas, good humour and bad jokes. Armed with a 24 hour café run by the inexhaustible Lulu, all sorts of unusual collaborations took place. There was an extraordinary outpouring of creativity, and for most of the artists who took part in these legendary sessions, and especially for me, they provided some of the best ever musical moments. Although some of these experiments have found a way out into the world through the years, some of the core sessions that I worked on with Karl Wallinger, had never been finished. In 2001 Stephen Hague was excited by what we played him from these sessions and boldly offered to sort out and work on this music. He did a wonderful job - along with Chuck Norman, his partner in crime -making their way through the mountain of music they were excavating. We asked Tchad Blake to apply some of his mixing magic, and we are now convinced that fifteen years after conception, this baby is fit and ready to leave home.
Wow! This was unexpected
I had just read this morning that Peter Gabriel's Big Blue Ball project was releasing in April of '08. What a pleasant surprise to be in the iTunes music store and see this sitting there. Upon first full listen, this is no doubt Peter Gabriel in top form. Clocking in at almost 5 and 1/2 minutes, it has what sounds to be Tony Levin on bass, with synth drums seemlingly mixed with an alalog kit and percussion. The in the pocket rythm section sounds somehow more modern than that from the "Up" album, and the wall of sound background vocals by Peter lead in to a very catchy chorus section. At about 3:30 in, the sound drops out to a vary sparse section which is trademark Peter before going back into the main rythm. Anyway - great song and a pleasant surprise to end the year. My only wish is that iTunes would somehow mark this as Peter Gabriel so people in the music store will know.
gorgeous!
I'm not sure who is behind this, but the voice is unmistakably that of Peter Gabriel. He is in top form here, his voice a perfect compliment to the cinematic ambition of this song. It's one of those unusual songs that touches upon a grand, universal message without bombast. The layered background vocals make it grow on you with each listen. A lovely song. One caveat: this needs to be listened to with headphones. There are so many subtle intracacies that may be missed upon first play.
