Album Review

Although it falls short of the excellence of Crimes of Passion, Precious Time, and Get Nervous, Wide Awake in Dreamland is a generally decent and respectable effort that has more pluses than minuses. Closer in spirit to Tropico than Passion or Time, the consistently melodic Dreamland stresses pop elements and steers clear of hard rock. The CD's most memorable offerings include the haunting and moody "Too Long a Soldier," the infectious "Lift Em on Up," and a disturbing commentary on child abuse, "Suffer the Little Children." Unfortunately, Pat Benatar's popularity was starting to decline in 1988 — and in the early-to-mid-'90s, she would receive little attention.

one love

Worth it just for "One Love"...what a great song!!!

The Decline of Her Fame and Rise of Her Talent

She shows off her voice like fire in this album. All Fired Up rocks like a boulder, while One Love evens it out with a pop sound. Don't Walk Away is beautiful and strong. Too Long a Soldier is a long ballad that some may find boring. Cerebral Man is the real stunner on this album. It has its own sound, different from that of any other on the album, and the chorus sends chills. Lift 'Em On Up has a very dancey beat, but really pushes its way forward with it's synth explosions. Suffer the Little Children continues on the same path as Hell Is For Children, but with a more ethereal sound that has obviously had hours and hours of time put into it.

Pat Benatar's polished mainstream pop/rock made her one of the more popular female vocalists of the early '80s. Born Patricia Andrzejewski on January 10, 1953, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the singer was raised in the nearby town of Lindenhurst on Long Island, NY. Benatar began singing regularly in the New York City area by the '70s, where...
