iTunes Review
Exquisite sadness is the keynote for chamber-pop combo Dark Dark Dark’s Wild Go. Frontwoman Nona Marie Invie’s tear-inflected alto vocals and adept keyboard touch are quietly riveting, hinting at buried longings and sorrows beneath an austere sonic surface. Her insinuating, slightly bluesy piano lines on “Daydreaming” and “Robert” help pin down elusive emotions, while her light-fingered accordion work on “In Your Dreams” adds buoyancy to an otherwise brooding tune. Marshall LaCount — whose banjo and clarinet work is crucial to the band’s sound – adds further vocal color to “Right Path” and “Heavy Heart.” Wild Go isn’t entirely a trip into melancholia — the spritely “Carnival” finds Invie offering a whimsical list of things she loves. A more somber sort of happiness is suggested in “Something for Myself,” a statement of bruised but unshakable pride rendered with classical grace. Dark Dark Dark may imply more than they reveal in these songs, but by artful indirection they achieve sustained moments of genuine beauty.

Still Original
I have loved what this band has been doing since I first heard them on Daytrotter.com and still love what they do on this album. So original and the vocals are great.
Fantastic.
I first heard Dark Dark Dark about a year ago live in Chicago. Ever since I've been hooked. This album is a continuation of their excellence and a must have.
Wild and Blue
How can it be that Minneapolis sextet Dark Dark Dark's sophomore release Wild Go (out October 5) may be the freshest, most breathtaking indie record of the year? WTF? They’re not even from Brooklyn or Portland!
Co-led by multi-instrumentalists/singers Nona Marie Invie and Marshall LaCount, the band infuse their gay chamber folk with handpicked elements of gypsy folk, French Quarter jazz and the sharp observations of the best American singer-songwriters. Invie handles most of the vocals in a style reminiscent of Natalie Merchant while LaCount’s reedy voice is softly casual. Accordions wheeze and a lone violin saws away like a Balkan street-corner musician on frenzied opener "In Your Dreams" as Invie and LaCount offer menacing harmonizing to a tale of lacerating isolation. They invoke the cabaret spirit of Dresden Dolls on "Say the Word;" the lustrous sorrow of Joni Mitchell on "Something for Myself." And on the stunning "Daydreaming," a melody that drifts away like a cloudless afternoon portends a night full of "unspeakable things," a phrase Invie repeats like an ominous mantra. So step aside, Williamsburg. Watch your back, Oregon. Minneapolis just beat you at your own game.
