iTunes Review

On The Wild Hunt, the second full-length release by Kristian Matsson — a.k.a. the Tallest Man On Earth — songs ebb and flow on little more than a nimbly played six-string guitar and Matsson’s passionate and delightfully ragged delivery. The Swedish artist filters musical greats from across timelines and genres: he has an undeniably Dylanesque voice, wrapped in a Bon Iver loner sensibility, while the essence of original Delta blues punctuates his emphatic downstrokes. With strong lyrical imagery and melodies that a ‘60s-era Dylan might have conjured, Matsson sounds utterly at home in Americana folk turf, and even manages to bring something new to the table. There’s an immediacy and intimacy here, and simple, yet poetic, expression invites listeners into the song: on the brilliant, effusive “King of Spain,” Matsson bemoans his “North pole” roots and dreams of Pamplona, where “All the senoritas sighing/will be the fountain of my lies.” His enthusiasm — for lust, regret, for universal longing — is fervent, his guitar work impeccable. Matsson’s moniker might be a stretch, but a more honest and skilled contemporary songwriter is hard to come by.

Now I Am One, Too...

It seems that only people with intense feelings about an album like to rate it (i.e. all 5 and 1 star ratings). For this reason, I have always disregarded iTunes ratings. That said, this album has impacted me so profoundly that I feel it is my duty to rate it a "5." I am a music collector and have over 3,500 albums... I only mention this for this simple reason:
I am constantly searching for something that will grab me and refuse to let go... something fresh that speaks to my soul. I admit, cheesy... nonetheless, the truth. This album has done that for me. It not only is well written but is very unique. There are not many albums that seem to transcend all music that has come before it, but I believe this is one. Something about it grabs you and refuses to let you turn away.
Each song on this album seems to tell a story... one that would be impossible to tell without each inflection of his voice or bent note (not to mention the impeccable lyrics). It is this type of album that keeps me looking, keeps me hungry for new bands and keeps me throwing money at iTunes...

This album took a few spins to sink in, and I think you would be wise in giving it a few before passing judgement. There are not many musicians out there like this, so it may take a short while to get used to. However, the listener will be rewarded for embarking on the journey as each listen exposes a new layer. I cannot gush enough... this is what music is supposed to be, a true "5 star" album.

I have no problem looking up to see him.

So, after having several months of time to get fully acquainted with Shallow Grave and some of his smaller releases, The Tallest Man on Earth presents a fully worthy and stellarly passionate album on his second full-length venture.

Plenty of people note the influences of Bob Dylan and other staple folk figures, but this guy is unquestionably in possession of his very own brand of folk magnificence. No matter what music you listen to, even if you've just happened to stumble on this fellow in your search for new music, you won't be disappointed by any of it. If you're typically turned off by acoustic guitar solo artists like I almost always am, you'll be surprised and captivated by this guy.

Granted, some of his single releases may be less accessible for first time listeners, either of his albums are golden. The Wild Hunt shows marvellously steady growth with no loss in The Tallest Man's musicianship or lyrics. Even the subdued, almost fragile urgency of Shallow Grave has been shed for a much bolder vocal style. The music has matured, but everything still feels like it comes from the same place. Wherever that place is, I hope I find it some day.

Folk Music.

The song The Wild Hunt is his best song yet. Amyone who enjoys people like Bob Dylan, Deer Tick will really enjoy this. Hell anyone who knows what good music sounds like should enjoy this.
