iTunes Review

John Mellencamp evolved from a struggling heartland rocker into a concerned man of the people. He always had a chip on his shoulder (his nickname is Little Bastard) and his songs and performances reflect that bravado, whether he is singing about love (“Hurts So Good,” “I Need A Lover”), scripting out tales of small town kids (“Jack and Diane”), shouting down the establishment (“Crumblin’ Down,” “Authority Song”), or expressing hope for the disenfranchised (“Pink Houses”). His attitude and his approach have never wavered. While he reached fame in the 1980s with a string of hits and emphatic concerts that established him as a fellow compatriot and pop-friendly version of Bruce Springsteen, Mellencamp still fought the stereotype (“Pop Singer”) and his music into the 1990s turned more introspective and organic. This 37-song collection brings all the aspects together, deliberately juxtaposing and blurring the different eras until everything comes together as one well-paced storyline with the young “Johnny Cougar” facing off against the adult Mellencamp.

If you're looking...

...for a great summary of the vast body of work for one of America's greatest songwriter ever, this is it! As the iTunes reviewer wrote, it would be nice if this compilation had been more chronological, but it doesn't detract much from what is arguably the best portfolio of American-rock ever!

Mellencamp evades the love-and-affection of mainstream radio because he is too hard to categorize (and avoids payola because he is too independent and stubborn) - is he another Springsteen, or is he trying to do solo-Stones; is he a folk-singer or is he a rocker; is he like Dylan and Young or Van Morrison or what?

The fact is he is all these and none of these. Mellencamp is simply among the finest songwriters ever in the American rock scene. He is unique and peerless in his honesty purity and independence. As such, he has earned a seat at the table of America's greatest rockers.

This album is as good a chronicle of this greatness as you can buy!

This is a great collection of songs! I have been waiting for Itunes to get the full set of great songs from John Mellencamp for a few years. Because I haven't gone into a music store since I fond Itunes, and hope I never have to.

Great Music!

Really nice collection of music! By the way, to clear up what a previous rater indicated...Jack and Diane was released in 1982, six years before Fast Car, I do believe. John Mellencamp did not copy anyone!

Biography

Born: October, 1951 in Seymour, IN

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Throughout his career, John Mellencamp has had to fight, whether it was for the right to record under his own name or for respect as an artist. Of course, he never made it easy on himself. Mellencamp began his career in the late '70s as a Bruce Springsteen clone called Johnny Cougar. As his career progressed, his music became more distinctive, developing into a Stonesy blend of hard rock and folk-rock. His musical development coincided with his growth in popularity — by the time "Hurts So Good"...
