Album Review

Despite a good cover of Muddy Waters' "Can't Lose What You Never Had" — highlighted by a great Dickey Betts solo — the Allman Brothers Band sounds lethargic at times on Win, Lose or Draw, although they still play decently. The title track and Dickey Betts' instrumental, "High Falls," are among the few highlights, decent but unexceptional performances sparked by Betts' playing (which is engaging even on the weaker tracks like "Louisiana Lou"). The album's main fault lies not with what it is (it's a fairly decent outing, actually), but what it could have been, and who it's from — as a debut album from a new band, it would be excusable and acceptable.

Customer Reviews

High Falls

I really like the song High Falls but I am not crazy about the rest of the album. I would rather pay a dollar extra for the song than have to pay $10 for the entire album.

WHY !!!???

There are at least 10 song's that I would love to download to my pod, however, I-Tunes makes you buy an entire album or CD for just one song, why not just charge a dollar or two more and give the customer what he/she wants. I have also noticed that all songs that are over the 10 minutes are on the Buy Album only list, why is that? In the past I have downloaded entire CD's, however, I will not do it again...

Running out of steam

Of course, after all the praise I gave the new sound of ABB on "Brothers & Sisters", being an album as great as that was, it must've been impossible to top. That being said, for it's flaws, this album is still great. "Can't Lose What You Never Had" is definitely one of the greatest Allman Brothers songs, and "High Falls" is another one of Dickey Betts' great instrumentals that, while paling in comparison to "Jessica" or "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", still reaches heights of musical transcendence that most music today can never reach. "High Falls", being almost twice as long as "Jessica", also gives Betts and Chuck Leavell the chance to stretch out and explore musical realms that are never quite reached in the studio, but only on the live stage, and that alone is worth the price of the album. The title track is one that would've probably been better suited in the hands of a singer/songwriter-type like Jackson Browne or James Taylor, while at the same time recalls Merle Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home". To hear Gregg Allman sing a song like this, let alone write it, is definitely out of left field for the Allman Brothers Band. Some other forgettable tracks... "Just Another Love Song" sounds like Betts rehashing his "Blue Sky" from "Eat A Peach" to not-so-splendid results. "Nevertheless" has sort of a Dr. John boogie woogie feel to it. "Louisiana Lou..." & "Sweet Mama" are both alright, but don't get much better than alright, which is pretty much the whole of the album. Compared to previous masterworks like "Eat A Peach" and "Brothers & Sisters", "Win, Lose, or Draw" doesn't get much better than alright.
