"The Non-metal Metal Girl" Strikes Again
The latest album from Amanda Somerville, known for her vocal work in European metal bands such as After Forever and Epica (for whom she replaced Simone Simons on tour while she had MRSA). "Windows" covers a wide range of styles from standard radio pop songs to harder material she probably picked up on the metal scene. "Mayday", "Point of Safe Return", and "Moth" are more along the pop/adult alternative lines, leading into "My Song For You" which, that and "Carnival" and "Clean", has a more soul/R&B feel to it. The segway between pop and rock, "Get Me" almost has a country feel to it, reminding me a little of early Kelly Clarkson. On many of her songs, Amanda begins sounding like Amy from Evanescence, particularly on the harder tracks of "Inner W***e" and "Out". The album ends returning to pop/soft rock with "All That I Am" and "Windows". My only criticism is that there is a lot of variation on this album and, though she at least comes off as pop, there's no real definitive way to describe her style. I guess that could be a good thing and a bad thing ;) But I definitely recommend this album; I never really liked pop and I found her through Epica...and I love this album. So get it. Now. Note: The bonus track only on the physical CD is "Sometimes", between "Clean" and "All That I Am".
Amanda!
Amanda is a beautiful woman and singer. I am glad she is getting noticed for her talents now. This is a beautiful product of her voice and work. I hope to hear more of her in the future!
