iTunes Review

Like Chuck Prophet, Will Kimbrough has had a good number of his songs covered by notables (Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Jack Ingram and Todd Snider, etc.) and he’s played with tons of others (Rosanne Cash, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Gomez, Emmylou Harris, the Jayhawks, Mark Knopfler, Buddy Miller, John Prine, Josh Rouse, Billy Joe Shaver, Mavis Staples, etc.). Kimbrough was awarded Instrumentalist Of The Year in 2004 by the Americana Music Association, so it’s no surprise that Wings resonates with rootsy soul. While on tour, JJ Cale and vintage Jamaican music became the van’s soundtrack and subsequently the inspiration for the atmospheric minimalism on Wings. The album doesn’t play Okie blues-dub, but if Kimbrough sung a few octaves lower, “Love to Spare” would sound like a lost gem from Cale’s 1971 fan favorite Naturally. The folkie title-track is stripped down to earthy acoustic instruments and lyrics that are both simple and descriptive, sounding much different than the version Buffett recorded on Buffett Hotel. With the handsome lead track “Three Angels,” Kimbrough just may have invented Country & Eastern.

Wings

Will Kimbrough is unreal and so is his new album. Long time fans will embrace this album while it is also sure to attract new listeners. One of the world's most underrated and unrecognized artists, Kimbrough is a master musician with a gift of songwriting that would rival the best of John Lennon. His music is gorgeous and the lyrics, like Lennon's, pull lsteners back to reflect on the meaning of life, both great and small. Three Angels, a celebration of his love for his wife and daughters, inspirations in earlier songs by this amazing artists, is a homey, warm song that will make listeners just feel good about life, the people we love, and the goodness of being loved. The title song, Wings, was previously released on Jimmy Buffett's Buffett Hotel. Jimmy recorded a pretty cool version of the song he and Will wrote together but Kimbrough's solo version really takes flight and is just down right uplifting! A Couple Hundred Miracles is sure to ease listeners back to remembering the miracles and simple pleasures in everyday life that are too often forgotten in the daily grind. The Day of the Troubadour, Open to Love, Big Big Love, and It Ain't Cool have an intense spiritual quality against a bluesy folk tapestry of instruments, many of which are played by Kimbrough himself. The harmonies on the album are warm and rich, pure comfort for the soul. All in all, this is another Will Kimbrough masterpiece. Great lo listen to around the house, in the office, or anywhere else. Too bad the album purchase doesn't come with credits and notes. The musicians, like Kimbrough are magnificent...especially the drum work and it would be neat to know more about the making of the album. By Wings and pray he releases another soon. If Clapton is God, Kimbrough must be something higher!

Biography

Born: 1964 in Mobile, AL

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Best-known as a name in the CD liner notes of some of the hippest country and rock artists of the '90s and 2000s, both Will Kimbrough's solo and his band work have been championed by critics on both sides of the ocean. Kimbrough first came to the attention of the industry as frontman for Will & the Bushmen, a popular college rock band formed in the unlikely locale of Mobile, AL. The Bushmen pounded out a reputation on the Southeastern frat-party circuit, releasing the self-produced Gawk in 1985....
