Album Review
David Bazan has stripped Pedro the Lion down to himself, his tape recorder and basement, and sonically the result is fine. Winners Never Quit is an odd fable of a corrupt, self-righteous politician and his sweeter but equally wayward brother. The opening song, "Slow and Steady Wins the Race," lends this whole affair more weight than it really deserves, and it is easily the best song on the album. Bazan works up a primitive blast of rock & roll on a couple of the songs, which gives Pedro more musical variety; otherwise, Bazan keeps it to the spare amateur vision he employed so well on It's Hard to Find a Friend; not always for the best. An interesting album, spooky in spots, but other than the terrific "Slow and Steady," this one's a curiosity.

A Flood of Emotions
This album holds such a dear place in my heart, David Bazan is without a doubt one of the finest songwriters of this soon passing decade. Every track on this album tells a little chunk of the larger story. I always felt that this was Pedro's best work, despite T.W. Walsh not being on this project. I saw these guys probably 3 times, starting in 2002, up until the end. Amazing live show.
The lyrics and music are so strong and heart wrenching. From "Protect the Family Name" to "Bad Things to Good People," this album is so powerful. I'm going to have to rebuy all my old Pedro, I'd forgotten how much I need it in my life.
So don't buy just this album, get'em all, they are just like Pokemon. Honestly though, these are some of the best alt/indie albums of this decade. Everyone should own these records...And get the whold Silver Jews catalog while you are at it.
Pretty Good
The only song I would recommend is "A Mind of Her Own"..
