Album Review

Not unlike Low or Stars, Northampton, MA-based coed indie rockers Winterpills go down easy on this ten-song debut. From the outset, the warm allure of "A Benediction" counts frontman Philip Price as an Elliott Smith devotee, but the group sounds best when Price gets vocal accompaniment from Flora Reed, who gives the percolating, acoustic pop of "Laughing" and the breathy, stripped-down "Cranky" harmonic life. The hard-working "Threshing Machine" and the muted glimmer of "Want the Want" personify the band's depth, leaving this eponymous offering a prescription for indie fans looking to fill a void. ~ John D. A Classic!

This is an instant classic. I'm adding it to my all-time favorite albums list. Best enjoyed when you listen all the way through, but each song stands on its own. Autumn has arrived and I find myself coming back to this again. Can digital downloads get worn out? If so, then I'll need to buy this one again.

Cool

I heard Pills for Sara on a Paste magazine sampler, I believe, and it sounded promising, little did I know the band was from only a few miles away in MA. Definitely worth a listen!

More Like Winter Chills

I think your music reviewer waxed far too lyrically. Winterpills' offering borders on mediocre and quite frankly they could fairly be accused of being a Simon and Garfunkel tribute band. You've got the same whispering lyrics and chord structures that are totally reminiscent of the halcyon days of the aforementioed.

Biography

Formed: 2003 in Northampton, MA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Dennis Crommett (guitar), Dave Hower (drums), Philip Price (vocals/guitar), and Flora Reed (vocals/keyboards) create the haunting melodies of Winterpills. The Northampton, MA, quartet initially came together in winter 2003; Crommett and Price, whose résumés include time spent playing with Spanish for Hitchhiking and the Maggies respectively, were looking to expand their acoustic jam sessions into something bigger, thus bringing on Hower (Spanish for Hitchhiking, the F*****g Sparklies, the Neilds)....
