Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here

Artist: Pink Floyd
Album: "Wish You Were Here"
Released: 1975
Label: Harvest

Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd. How would you exist without this genius? It only takes a mind to come up with what's in their mood, the exception being "Wish You Were Here". At first, I thought this was going to be boring and so and so, but at the end of the first listen, I was completely shocked by how fantastic this album is.

It would only be two to three listens and now, I adore the period of what was "Wish You Were Here". The first part of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" starts off the album to a boisterous start, massive drums from Nick Mason and the glorious guitar and all in this two part tribute to former leader and topic of the album, Syd Barrett. This is segued into the haunting "Welcome to the Machine". David Gilmour's vocals sound like a bullhorn containing him turned up past eleven and the keyboards from the late, great Richard Wright makes it much frightening. Try listening to this in a shower alone. It is mental and more scarier. Now, here comes "Have a Cigar" with a unusual vocal in Roy Harper. His delivery may be poignant and hilarious but the backing is some pretty serious, heavy stuff. It's like marching into a battle you've been straying away from all your life and then, once you become big enough, there you are. A battle with all the machines and the freaks who want control of who you are and what you're made of. That was what was happening to Floyd and that is also one of the serious topics on here, as the opening of the door and a listening party is in the beginning and end of the previous song, respectively. But, back to "Have a Cigar". As mentioned, the backing is pretty heavy, but it's not really a highlight, along with "Welcome to the Machine". But what is the highlight is the title track, "Wish You Were Here". A calling of sorts to the reclusive Barrett to see what his influence and presence has put on the Floyd, but in recent years, has been put by families wishing that their loved ones hadn't gone away. "Wish You Were Here" is a absolutely touching song, the best song out of this album and a overall classic. The second part of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" starts off where the first left off, but it kinda drags on after that first part, like it gets boring after all the greatness that was the middle section of the album, but it doesn't mean that this isn't alright. It's quite good, it's just that, for me, it isn't as good as the first part. This was the beginning of the end for the Floyd, as the tensions would reach a new high after this.

"Wish You Were Here" started something that proved to be the downfall of the classic lineup for Floyd. Roger Waters would become more influential and dominating by the time they started to work on "Animals". Being around the highest point of glam rock and near the beginning of punk, the Floyd looked to be out of scale, but they still had the way in being as obscure as they can be with the times.

Pink Floyd.
"Wish You Were Here". Five stars.
Highlights: "Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part 1" and "Wish You Were Here".

I'M SO GLAD

I'm so glad that ITunes put all Pink Floyd content back on iTunes. I was SO EXCITED that they got back this album and The Dark Side of the Moon because they're both terrific albums!
This one is definitely worth buying :)

The Floyd never gets old.

Awesome! Here is what I think of the tracks.
1. Shine on You Crazy Diamond (full song): 10/10: This is a beautiful masterpiece. It is almost 30 minutes long, it is pretty dang long, but great!
2. Welcome to the Machine: 10/10: Another beautiful track, when I listen to this, the riff chills down my spine.
3. Have a Cigar: 9.25/10: Nice music, but the lyrics are weird.
4. Wish You Were Here: 10/10: My favorite Floyd song, it is very, very beautiful.
Overall rank is: 9.76/10: My favorite Pink Floyd album, very, very beautiful music.

Biography

Formed: 1965 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Pink Floyd is the premier space rock band. Since the mid-'60s, their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits. At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical, operatic quality in both sound and words. Despite their astral image, the group was brought down to earth in the '80s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and,...
