iTunes Review

With Roots Above And Branches Below finds Christian metalcore sextet the Devil Wears Prada lyrically branching out from their faith-based roots and veering toward a darker, heavier sound. “Sassafras” opens with a brutal onslaught of artillery-approximating drums, machine- gun guitar riffs, and feral-sounding vocal tantrums of larynx-destroying screams. It almost sounds like death metal until just after the two minute mark, when a contrastingly crystalline chorus comes in, putting some emo back in the screamo. Where most songs here begin with what is commonly known as Cookie Monster vocals, “Dez Moines” takes the road less traveled by starting with the clean and euphonious inflections of Jeremy DePoyster before Mike Hranica tears into his esophagus with the tortured growls of a man possessed. “Louder Than Thunder” is the token piano ballad that floats beautifully with waltzing rhythms and loads of digital reverb on DePoyster’s soaring melodies — the song would sit perfectly on a soundtrack to a modern film about high school vampires or teen witches.

TDWP has always been one of my top favorite bands, and their music before this has been simply amazing to say the least. But when this album came out, it became my top favorite of theirs. Don't get me wrong, I love their old music...but this CD just made me ecstatic. My favorite songs are Ben Has a Kid and Assistant to the Regional Manager, but they are alllll good. I highly recommend this to any TDWP fan!

Great album but...

Am I the only one who was a bit surprised that they are a christian band the first time they heard of them?

Biography

Formed: 2005 in Dayton, OH

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Mystifyingly taking their name from a popular chick lit bestseller, the Devil Wears Prada is easily one of the most bizarrely named bands of their time. Since the group is a Christian metalcore act from Dayton, OH, one assumes that the band name was chosen not because the sextet is a foe of former Vogue...
