Album Review

Before their 1994 major-label debut with A&M, Bringing on the Weather, Jackopierce released the indie album Woman as Salvation just a few months earlier. The acoustic duo began to develop a full-band sound by collaborating with other local musicians, such as David Garza, who contributed some production work, as well as playing tambourine and singing backup. Cary Pierce and Jack O'Neill would also utilize drums, bass, and electric guitar on their second LP. Standout tracks include the debut of two of their most beloved songs, "Vineyard" and "Please Be Nice to Me," as well as live favorite "My Baby." The definitive version of "Please Be Nice to Me" is on the live album Live From the Americas. Woman as Salvation was an artistic breakthrough for Jackopierce and is significantly better than their solid debut, Jackopierce. For anyone who came to be a fan after the band signed with a major and toured with the HORDE festival, the two indie Jackopierce albums are essential. Start with Woman as Salvation, as it will likely have songs you are familiar with from concerts, or 1998's greatest hits collection, Decade 1988-1998.

Timeless sound

There are just some artists who reach a level where you can listen to their work years later and still appreciate it. Jackopierce is one of those. I liked both the acoustic and full-band arrangements. All of their stuff is unique with an American heartland flair. Check out the "best of" Cd- DECADE to get a really good anthology of their music prior to last year's release of "Promise of Summer."

unforgettable

Strong songwriting and perfect vocal harmonies - that's JackOPierce. This is one of their three best albums. Woman as Salvation, Be Nice To Me, and Vineyard are indie classics - they take me back to funky college bars and philosophical discussions over local brews. Great band, great album. For sound comparison think Nickelcreek, with harmonies like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or the Eagles.

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Dallas, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

One of the hardest-touring bands of the '90s, Jackopierce slipped under the mainstream's radar to earn a widespread following on college campuses with their pleasant acoustic folk-pop. Guitarists/singers Jack O'Neill and Cary Pierce founded the duo in 1988, while both were attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas as theater majors. Honing a charmingly simple, low-key sound centered around vocal harmonies and acoustic guitars, the two developed a strong local following around the Dallas area....
